32nm when?

Gulftown on x58 chipset in 2010+

woohoo! Glad I chose i7. Core Duo/Quad owners are screwed and will need to update mobo + cpu + mem to go 32nm. i7 owners will only need to buy a new cpu to stay on top.

AMD is dying and will need to come up with a surprise. It's roadmap isn't looking purty compared to Intel's. :(

Screwed? I have yet to play a game or run an application that even really stresses my gaming rig beyond 90% and that was me trying to max it out with doing encoding video dvd->h.264 while building a huge map in UT3. I seriously doubt I will need to upgrade my main gaming rig for another 2-3 years at the rate new games are coming out.

I would like to see a nice 32nm ULV chip for a small netbook/notebook with a little more balls then the Atom, pref something closer to an e6600@3.0ghz.
 
Is it certain that the lack of graphic chip connection will prevent the Clarkdales from working, rather than just making that one feature unavailable? I've no need for an IGP in this setup that I'm looking for for the P55, but if there's no future 32nm Quads that will work on it - well, that'd be a big bummer.
There aren't going to be any 32nm Nehalem quads period. Only dual-cores with HT and Gulftown.
 
It would seem odd to not take the benefit of 32nm to Quads as well. Since it's not likely they'll have an even smaller process THAT soon. Therefore keeping quads at 45nm... well, it just doesn't seem to make sense. Then again many things don't make sense and are still true, so go figure.
 
building a new set of tools for a chip thats going to be out for a year isn't worth it to them. Plus their 32nm production capacity is limited and they have a lot of 45nm capacity.
They'll do 32nm s1156 quads based on sandy bridge, but not until then.

Nanan: There will be 32nm ULV duals, they're the i7-620UM @ 1.06Ghz (up to 2.13Ghz on turbo) and i7-640UM @1.2 (up to 2.26Ghz on turbo). Both are 17W parts including GPU.
 
I love the "ream" accusation. I built my i7 rig almost a year ago, and it only cost me 600 bucks. God i miss 30% cash back :(
 
So if I'm getting it right, basically it means Sandy Bridge won't work with the current boards/chipsets. What a mess. I guess I simply better stop hoping for a "slot-in" processor upgrade in the future :p So much for being green in that department :(

There is no way to know that one way or another at the moment. We don't know if the current sockets and/or chipsets will carry over to Sandy/Ivy Bridge or not.
 
call it 75% chance that sandy WILL work in current s1156 mobos. (again, with seperate graphics, as the sandy quads will have an onboard GPU like the westmere duals).

I'm going to be buying a new mobo, CPU, and RAM soon and I want to jump on things at the most effective time. 32nm is no doubt the future, but will this require a new motherboard? I don't want the motherboard to be obsolete in less than a year's time. I was screwed last time with my socket 939, don't want to make the same mistake.

32nm chips will not require a new motherboard. However, the only 32nm chips this generation will be the 6-core LGA1366 CPUs which will most likely be quite expensive, and the Clarkdale series which are all dual-cores. So unless you plan on shelling out for a 6-core chip next year, you'd be best off with either an LGA1156 or LGA1366 quad and just sticking with that until Sandy Bridge is released.

I wonder why intel would ignore quad core market entirely tho, surely theres a pretty big demand for it than extreme highend 6cores and Dualcores this late in the game.
Traditionaly Intel has released CPUs in virtually every price segment and a huge line up covering all their families.
Seems weird that they won't use the by then mature 32nm process to release some quads.

LGA1156 is very new so i wouldn't be surprised if they do actually bring out 32nm quads sometime quite later. Definately later than 1366.
 
I think that Intel is probably going to see what's hot and what's not... Regarding 32nm Quads. If there's a large installed user base of LGA1366 users that want them they'll pull another Penryn to LGA775. There really wasn't a need for the Penryn, but Intel wanted to milk out the last upgrade cycle for the socket. Even though, Penryn support was spotty at first (which is what we'll all have to assume will be the case with 32nm) lots of people bought the chips because they were the hottest thing available. We'll have to see what's going on in the market around the chips ready time. I for one hope to jump on the 32nm quad if available in the future, because frankly a slower 6 core 12 thread may not be enticing over my current 4.0GHz i7 setup, as I'm sure is the case with many other users.

Who knows... In a few years Windows 7 may get bloated and we'll have lots of stealthed bots running that we'll need all of those cores and threads to read Hardforum. Hehehe...
 
lets make this simple, theres NO situation where a gulftown will be measurably slower than a quad, removing the downside of "more cores = slower cores" is the sole reason for turbo boost.
A dual is as fast as a single when a single thread is needed;
a quad is as fast as a dual when a dual is needed and as fast as a single when a single thread is needed;
a hex is as fast as a quad when a quad is needed, as fast a dual when a dual is needed, and as fast as a single when a single is needed.

Yes, you'll pay more for having the wider mode available, but the slower clockspeed aspect is now gone.
First chart shows the known s1156 lineup by clockspeed, second shows by price.
