32bit vs 64bit - Why should I consider?

You probably need someone else to install your OS for you.

The difference between you and him is he tries to troubleshoot and find solutions to his problems, not spread anti-MS FUD.

The only reason to use 32-bit is if you have driver problems (which apparently you dont)

To be fair, though, I only have 2 programs in my library that can benefiet form them. Autodesk Maya (3D rendering/animation program) and, amusingly, HL2/Portal. Otherwise i've seen no real performance increase or speed increase.

That being said, I only own 1 machine that's 32-bit still, that's my old laptop. Everything else is 64 Bit.

not spread anti-MS FUD.

How is anything I've said here anti-MS?

And I'm still waiting for someone to explain how anything I've said is "FUD". It's all true. 64bit is not as stable (this is due to some drivers not being as stable as their 32bit counterpart) and doesn't have as much compatibility (this is due to that some manufacturers don't support 64bit, some hardware (still) doesn't have 64bit drivers, and some software isn't as stable on a 64bit platform. Is this M$ fault? Of course not, but it doesn't change what I've said.

Until I can recommend 64bit as a viable platform to my grandmother, I don't consider it as solid as 32bit. Your average enthusiast won't have any major issues with it, but is it ready for the general public? Nope not yet. Telling people to use 64bit just because you do and "it's the future" is short-sighted and insensitive. There are viable reasons to use both platforms.

The problem with 95% of the people in this forum is that they're less interested in having a discussion than having people agree with them.

What specific hardware are you running?

What you don't understand is that you are a minority, a very small one at that. You're one of the very few people who seems to think 64bit OS's from MS aren't stable when the vast majority disagrees.

Where is your proof?

64bit is not as stable (this is due to some drivers not being as stable as their 32bit counterpart)
You really have to reach to get to this conclusion. 64-bit drivers can be buggy just like a 32-bit driver. 64-bit drivers aren't necessarily harder to make. 64-bit Windows drivers today are as mature as their 32-bit counterparts, if not more so. The drivers also can't be very different, since companies like nVidia, ATI, and Creative Labs don't even bother to differentiate the 32-bit and 64-bit drivers with different version numbers.

I'll make a small point here: Windows Server 2008 R2 will be 64-bit exclusive. This means Microsoft is willing to bet the bank on 64-bit. They trust it. I trust it. I've trusted it since late 2006 when I went 64-bit exclusive on all of my machines. I trust it at work. On a variety of hardware taking a varied amount of daily abuse, none of these machines have *EVER* done anything I would consider "unstable." They work.

What specific hardware are you running?

Asus P5Q
E8500
Corsiar Dominator
Ati 4850
300gb Velociraptor
EMU 1212m ( I do audio work )

That's the important stuff anyway.

Where exactly did I say it isn't stable? I said it's LESS stable than 32bit. Does that mean everyone will have issues? Of course not, but in my experience I have had issues with 64bit Win7 that I haven't seen with 32bit (similar to the OP). Of course I get called a troll, anti-MS, accused of spreading FUD, and called incompetent because I'm sharing my personal experiences and opinions... Fanboism at it's finest.

What Criccio said -- Bonsai is definitely just spreading FUD.
I pretty strongly dislike bonsai, but I don't see any motivation for him to be spreading misinformation about 32-bit vs. 64-bit. Usually people have a motivation or an agenda for spreading FUD, and I see nothing of the sort here. I'm not seeing anything anti-Microsoft, either.

Call me a troll if you want, but I do agree with Bonsai *in**certain**cases* for instance I have a wireless card I eventually just boxed up because the 64-bit drivers were too unstable and either dropped the connection too often or crashed the whole XP-64 PC (though under XP-32 it was rock-solid). I have several pieces of legacy hardware that are like this. For older hardware 64-bit is not an option if it's mission-critical. There are many cases in buisiness systems where 32-bit is the only option for now.

Though for the average home user who is buying reasonably new hardware, I dont see any reason to go 32-bit...

Have you been around much? Not just this thread, but many, many others.
I'm not talking about other threads. How do other threads pertain to this thread, criccio?

Like I said earlier, I don't like bonsai either, but some of you need to dial down the defend-Microsoft-at-all-costs attitude. It is in no way helpful.

What isn't helpful is halfway through 2009 telling people that they should be using a 32bit OS. Yes, he didn't specifically say that, but i'm sure he would like to.

Anyway, like I said a page ago in this thread, the more this is debated, this argument becomes less and less relevant. 64bit is here, its stable (for the majority), it WILL eventually replace 32bit OS'es completely, so why not just get it over with?

I can vouch and safely say that I've seen my share of situations in which bonsai was trolling his bs around where MS is being talked about. It's very very true. In this case, though, it may POSSIBLY be more about his experience with things. But, I do have to say that if for some reason you can't get x64 working properly, then you probably didn't think it through prior to picking up the specific hardware you did. While there is a great ton of hardware out there that has absolutely no problem working with x64, there is still some that doesn't have proper 64-bit drivers, and more research could probably have saved you some agony. In any case, bonsai, you've said what you've had to say about MS and 64 bit stuff, so I think saying anything else in here will make it seem that everyone's opinion on what you're trying to do in this thread is correct. So I'd just leave if I were you.

I still believe that what he's spreading is fud simply because it's misinformation -- he's saying controversial things without any kind of backup or evidence, and it's something contrary to the experience of [H] users in general. You can't argue with a troll, and this kid seems to be one.

Anyway, this thread has lived long past its use -- the OP should create another in the Gen Hardware section to help troubleshoot his issue.

I looked around for drivers for bonsai's described equipment. Out of those, only ATI is providing explicitly compatible Windows 7 x64 drivers. The others have provided drivers that are supported on Vista x64, but this isn't a guarantee that they'll work in Windows 7 x64. I suspect the problem isn't with the x64 platform as much as it is with drivers from those IHVs (assuming the system's entire set of hardware is entirely functioning properly).

i agree, though the blank screen instead of bsod usually signals either a psu or gpu temperature problem.

I don't think you see too many people like that, if any. Most of us only want to see factual information posted, because that's what people seeking answers need...someone's bullshit, incorrect opinion. Don't confuse someone rightfully defending Microsoft in a certain situation as some fanboy defending MS at all costs.

If you check out AVS Forum, you will find all kinds of problems with x64 OS's and certain TV tuner cards, players, codecs, etc. Some guys jump through flaming hoops to get it to run on a HTPC, but in the end a HTPC just doesn't need or benefit from x64. So, there are cases where x86 is a better choice due to hardware, drivers and apps. I personally don't do anything that x64 would help me with and I like knowing that any older hardware that I might install will work.

It is very easy to get a x64 install setup for video. Yes, people have issues with it but then they are stupid.
My desktop is x64 and I can play any video format out there.
TV Tuner cards are a matter of the company providing x64 drivers. The very popular HDHomerun has drivers. Others do as well.

Whatever... glad you are so brilliant.

I'll share my brilliance with you. The easy method is the vista codec pack along with the x64 components. Free download. Install and play.
There are more manually ways to do this though, without codec packs.

There are people who have tried every conceivable combination and still not gotten good results. when you look at all the possible combinations of hardware, tuner cards, codecs and players, it is amazing any of it works at all. Most guys are not going to run out and buy a new tuner card because it has x64 support. They will (like me) just install x86 and have everything work. I used to build dvr's for a video survellience company, so I know a little bit about this and just installing the vista codec pack does not always solve the problem...

Well I don't know what to tell you. Either the people are stupid or they aren't doing it right. It doesn't matter the combination of hardware. Install codec pack. Play video. If your system isn't up to par you can have issues with HD video. And there would be a wee bit more involved if you want HA and your system supports it.
Those who don't want to download a codec pack(and I don't blame them) can get the individual filters and register them. AC3filter has x64 extensions. I saw a link a few months ago for a x64 Haali splitter.

If your tuner card doesn't have 64 bit drivers it's probably quite old. No, one does not need to run out and buy a new one. Sure 32bit works fine. I use beta build 7000 of windows 7 32bit on my HTPC now. Though I find x64 windows results in better playback in more situations. In my experience.
But getting video playing in x64 windows is just as easy as getting it playing in 32bit.

Well I don't know what anyone's problem is with video playback...I run Vista Business x64 and I can watch any format just fine...?
