Ive just overclocked my 3200xp and i can get it up to 2424mhz and it passes the sisoft sandra tests and pc mark cpu tests multiple times without problems. However, when I play quake or unreal it crashes out every time. Its totally stable with the same games at 2400mhz. How can I get the system stable for these games at 2424mhz? The only settings ive changed are a) the fsb b) multiplier and c) vcore voltage. Nothing else has been changed. Also at 2424mhz my sound dies too, yet if I go back to 2400mhz its fine again. Anybody know how to fix these two problems?

No idea. I cant see it in the bios anywhere. I see a few settings for AGP (voltage, frequency) but none for PCI. Abit NF7 I have. I see a setting under 'advanced chipset features' called "enhance PCI performace" maybe ill give it a try and see.

Ok I got the sound back through that setting. Now I get this error running ut2003:

UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2003-04-07_17.42]
OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 2436 MHz with 1023MB RAM
Video: RADEON 9800 PRO (6387)

General protection fault!

History: FinishRelevantLights <- GetRelevantLights <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FPlayerSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop

Passes all the sandra tests and pc mark with no problems.

what core voltage and what cooling? you're just about at the max for a barton on air...some have hit 2.5 but that's kinda out of the ordinary...i'd leave it at it's most stable setting (2.4ghz) and enjoy...

Core is 1.75v and using coolermaster...the one that looks like a jet engine. I have the fan up about half way and at load its about 55* but i cant turn the fan up any louder, its just too annoying. I watercool it if need be though.

it sounds like you need just another small bump in voltage...2424 @ 1.75 is impressive...it might also be your ram might need a bit more juice...are you FSB overclocking? if so, you might wanna try bumping the voltage up on the ram just a tad...and i'd prolly bump the vcore to 1.80 and turn the fan back up and see if it's stable...it's ok to toss upto 1.85v to a XP as long as you have the cooling...so you're save as far as that goes...if it's stable, change your cooling setup to accomodate your prefered noise level....there's several good options out there for air cooling, maybe someone else can ring in with a good suggestion here...and there are a couple very good watercooling kits also...

you only have a little more tweaking to go before you hit 2424, and i know there's alot more knowledge out there. i just got back into this stuff so i'd like someone to correct my advice if i'm wrong...but i personally would settle for 2400 if it's 100% stable...that's still a damn nice rig...and the performance increase from 24 extra mhz might not be worth the trouble...but then again like you said you could watercool and then go for broke... :D

good watercooling kit is the Koolance Exos (hardocp has review somewhere) and the Hydrocool seems to have finally gotten somewhat better

air would be zalman cnps 7000CU for quite, or SP-94+any fan of your choice (i believe both use the thru mobo mounts......)

these are some good cooling options me thinks.......

I dont want water running through my pc *UNLESS* its absolutely worth it. How quiet is it 'really'? I was looking at this kit, is it good? http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/product.php?productid=17239&cat=511

If water cooloing is the way to go and WILL give me really low temps and noise then i'll go for it but otherwise I wont bother.

Also should I be putting my vid card up a little too now? Heres my full specs....

3200xp @ 200x12
Abit NF7
1GB Corsair pc3200 @ 200mhz
Radeon 9800pro with zalman heatpipe and the add on fan @ stock speeds.
Audigy 2zs
480 watt Enermax PSU
