Right I got a digital rebel xt, for some reason I took a bunch of shots but they came up blank in the thumbnail preview, my canon software also was pretty slow and transferred one image, i cant update my firmware either. Is it a cf card problem? Is there a way to recover my photos? They showed up on the LCD when I took the pictures, it was cold out today but nothing to bad it was in a car in a bag for a couple hours but the temp never dropped lower than 50 degrees.

The CF card is a Lexar WA 1GB and was bundled from a reputable camera company.

Are you taking the pictures in RAW format instead of jpg? You might want to take a look, raw will not show up unless you install the new microsoft raw viewer. Or you can use the software that came with your XT, or download Rawshooter essentials 2005 because it is good and free.

Also if you say it is transferring slow, then I am going to guess you are shooting in RAW (8megs) vs Fine JPG (3megs). Also make sure you cardreader is HiSpeed USB 2. The Lexar card is not that bad, but the older lexar card had big problems with the RebelXT and 20D. You might need to update the firmware to 1.0.3 I think that should fix it. In the future the SanDisk Ultra II are some of the best for CF type Digital Cameras.

There was a history of the professional-line of Canon cameras having problems with the Write Accelerated Lexar cards (which caused Lexar to recall those cards and issue an updated version of the cards because they were defective or something), but I don't recall the Digital Rebel XT inheriting those issues. Either way I use SanDisk Ultra II or SanDisk Extreme CF media myself...none of Canon's DSLR cameras support Lexar's Write Acceleration to my knowledge anyways.

That said, are you transfering your images by connecting your camera to the computer, or are you using a card reader that you put your CF card into? I'd recommend a CF card reader since they're generally faster and allow you more control over what is on the card in terms of firmware updating and accessing RAW image files.

Generally a corrupt CF card will result in very strange artifacts and color shifts in a JPEG image...not a blank JPEG image. Then again some software may chose not to render/decode a corrupt JPEG image which may lead to showing a blank image. Try opening the images up in IrfanView because it supports files that I've found GIMP and PhotoShop to choke (and lock up) on.
