300gb HDD Formatting time?

About how long should this take? Seems like I've been waiting forever for mine to. Probably close to 30 minutes now.

This is using the Vista cd, formatting it right before I install vista.
 
took me about 4 minutes to format a 300gb Maxtor in vista setup
 
If you did a "full" format, that's normal. If you did a "quick" format, that's out of the ordinary.
 
Oh, well thats good to hear. I had checked it after my 2nd post, and it was done.

So it took anywhere from 30-45 minutes because I wasn't in the room checking on it all the time.
 
OK guys, just got back to the house and it still isn't done installing.

What the hell.

I got here and it was 32% done, and about 20 minutes later it is now at 34%.

It is at the expanding files part of the install.

What is the problem here? Why should it take a full day to install vista?
 
Anyone ever experience this issue? Just checked on it and it is at 40%.

Could it be my DVD drive? It is a LG sata DVD burner.

Do you guys think it will be fine? Just because it is installing extremely slow, will it be this slow doing normal tasks?
 
The entire install shouldnt take more than an our on newer hardware.

How many devices are plugged in? (ie how many hard drives, cd drives, sound cards, etc.....)
 
I have 1 sata drive
1 soundcard
1 hard drive
1 video card
2 sticks of ram.

It is pretty bare, and the hard drive is brand new.

Is there some settings in the bios I should enable or something?

Edit: Also, when I woke up today, it had completed installing, but that has to be waaaay to long. After install, when I was telling it what time zone I am in, it was very slow.
 
okay is this a "full format" or a "quick" format a FULL format takes a while and this is normal, my 500G took some time

Are you formating it IN windows, or install a new OS on it?

a "quick" format should literally be sub 10mins (was about 2 mins on a raid 10 936g set up i had)

It was a full and it took a full day to format it and install vista.

I guess I'll just have to RMA it.

It "works" but is extremely slow. Took 5 minutes to boot up.
 
Just received 500GB Barracuda. Chose quick format under Vista and it took a couple seconds. Didn't even notice.
