I was looking at getting a digital rebel 300d and noticed the camera is over a year old. Canon has introduced a few new cams recently and I was wondering if a replacement for the 300d is due? I'd really like to get my hands on one but I have an incling a replacement in the price range is gonna be around the corner real soon.

The next closest camera you will see is the 20D, which is 8MP and 5FPs. The Body only will be $1499

It comes out Late this month to mid next month I am told

It's already out.

canon doesnt seem to be replacing their dslr's as frequently as their consumer cameras. I would predict it will be another year before the 300d is replaced. I could be wrong though. Photokina is pretty close and camera announcements come from there usually.

Canon has allready announced the 20d replacement for the 10d, the 1d mark2 a while ago, and now rumoured 22mp 2d. The 300d is a very capable camera for the money, and i dont really see them replacing it this year without taking away sales from the new 20d.

Plus i think you can now get the 300d for about $850 from reputable shops with the kit lens, which is a bargain.

the 20d with lens is closer to 1600/2000$ depending on which kit.

Their professional DSLRs don't get replaced very often.

There was less than a year from the D30 to the D60, then 1 year between the D60 and the 10D. It's been a little over a year since the 10D came out and now we have the 20D. I wonder what will come after the 20D and how long till then?

The 300D is the first in cheap DSLR category, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I just placed an order for a 300D. I'm going on a trip and really wanted a new cam with me. Hopefully I'll enjoy it at least 4-6 months before a new one is released. Then I won't feel so shafted.

Canon has only released 5 digital SLRs in 5 years, compared to over a hundred point and shoot models.

I stand corrected, even though the D6000 and the 1Ds MK II don't quite count.

the d6000 was made in 98 (double checked that)

but the 1ds MKII still falls into the 5 year cat.

I'd imagine a 300D replacement will be in the near future thanks to competition from Nikon (D70) and Pentax (*ist DS) in the entry-level; at the very least a price decrease on the 300D. I think an easy solution for Canon would be to A) "factory unlock" the settings that are allowed by using the hacked firmware B) have it be all black C) Digic II & ETTL-II and D) same 0.2s startup as on the 20D.

What you can do is just buy a used on though and sell it if/when a new version comes out if you think its worth the upgrade. You'd probably lose like $50-100, which is cheap if you think about it as a 3-4 month (or however long until a replacement comes out) rental. I just sold mine with the grip for $630.
