300$ upgrade - Is it possible?

Hello

I'm looking to upgrade my computer. The trick is I don't want to spend more then 300$. Heres what I'm looking for. I want a new case, a new motherboard, a 3ghz cpu (amd or p4), a gig of ram, and a power supply.

I already have a soundcard, vidcard, hd and other such things.

Is this upgrade even possible? I don't want to buy parts that are so cheesy that they will fall apart in a year or two but I also don't need big name brand either. I would also be willing to go down to 768mb of ram but no further.

I've looked around at a few websites but so far nothing has really stuck out as being a good deal. Also it looks like my big spender is the ram.

Thanks in advance for any advice for where to go or ideas.
 
1.7 ghz p4, 768mb RDRAM, ATI 9600pro, Audigy 2, a 60gig and 80gig hd, network card, wireless card, firewire card, and a modem which I never use.

I'm interested in upgrading for gaming purposes. I mess around a little in photoshop but really thats not affecting this decision. Right now I get some slow down from my games at 1024 res and can't even try for 1280. I think a lot of this has to do with my cpu.

When I bought my comp 1.7 was top of the line so I doubt my cpu can just be upgraded with my current board.

u could overclock your current CPU........to like 2.2GHz.....with proper cooling
 
if you go with a 2.8 P4 it can be done for under $400

forton 400w psu
cheap 865 mobo
P4 2.8 C/E
1gb RAM

right under $400, but you'll have to look around.
 
Hmm I'm not sure if overclocking would work well for me without getting a new case. My current one is kinda cramped.

I'm also now (since everything costs so much) considering just upgrading my case, board, and cpu. Not sure if they make modern boards for rdram (hopefully they do). Thanks to everyone who has given advice. I really appreciate it.
 
RD RAM isn't supported anymore that I know of, it just never caught on. It was really expensive, and didn't offer enough performance gain to merit buying it, so it kind of disappeared. You may be able to sell it though, for whatever reason sometimes the older RAM goes for just as much as the newer stuff, since you can't get the old kind anymore and people upgrade their old crappy computers rather than getting a better one.

Check out a computer show if you have one in the area and see what you can get for it.

Ok, lemme get cracking here.

You can do a Mobile Barton 2500+, abit NF-7s, and 1gb of Kingston for $340 at Newegg. Add in a case/PSU, and you're set. OC that to the speed you want. Oh, and $20 for an Aerocool or other CPU fan.
