300-500 Budget

Just found out I need a laptop for a class I'm taking next semester. Been looking at the asus eee's thinking of the 4gb model and OC'in/ throwing in a 2gb stick of ram and running XP. Throw in another 8bg of flash and i'm at what like 500$? Does anyone have any better suggestions? I like playing warcraft 3 mostly, can the eee's run it decently?

I think you're overestimating what the eeePC can do. Run Windows XP? Sure, with a little bit of work. Play Warcraft 3? I really, really don't think so. Maybe Warcraft 2.

I don't know what you need the laptop for in your class though. If you're supposed to do some sort of modeling or coding, the eeePC might not be the best choice because of its speed.

I doubt you can OC an eeepc. Besides, it uses something like a 900mhz Celeron. What's the point? Maybe you should look at a low end Dell Vostro. They're very competitively priced and will probably be able to play some older games.

The EEEPC comes clocked @ 630MHz You can run it at 900 using setfsb or an older bios that allows the fsb to be set @ 100MHz.

So Technically Speaking he wouldn't be overclocking, but at the same time he would

I mostly need it for powerpoint, excel and note taking. I thought the eee would be good because of how small it is. I guess the compaq packs a lot more power but I thought the overall quality of the EEE was better.
