They use the same semi-glossy coating. The Z30i is better since it does not suffer from obvious overshoot ghosting while the 3014 does (it shows up during normal use: scrolling text and moving windows slowly, ect...), but the Z30i lacks an sRGB mode so you will have to rely on color management (games don't support color management and you will need to learn how to enable it in various programs) to get proper colors. The Z30i's color presets also suck so you will need to purchase a colorimeter (color munkie or i1 display pro). All of Dell's xx14 monitors can suffer from a very strong green tint so the 3014's sRGB mode still might suck and the color controls are only available when using the Custom Color mode which uses the monitors native, wide gamut. Color management and calibration is required to make both these semi-comparable to a quality 1440p monitor, many of which are available for under 400$ and offer better all around performance.
Enjoy your new, very overpriced, mediocre 30"
I hope you don't mind sitting at least 4ft away to avoid the far more pronounced IPS glow. If you don't care about color accuracy+quality or black levels then most of the above doesn't apply.
You could spend your 1000$ on a glow free Eizo EV2736W which offers better preset color accuracy and doesn't have any response time related issues.

Can you provide more explanation as to why you are "stuck" with this scenario? (Employer buying them for you?) Will they listen to reasonable arguments about better ways to spend their $? What is your intended use?

Well I do a lot of electronics schematic and design work as well as coding, spread sheets, lots of pdf document reading etc. The 16:10 aspect ratio and the actual size of the monitor is important for me.
I could technically get a Macbook Pro and 2 27inch thunderbolts but almost all the productivity software I use is Windows only and I am not that happy with having to use multiple resource heavy synthesizing and circuit analysis tools under Parallels.
I am aware of the benefits of 27inch 1440p panels, I recently moved my home setup from 3 27inch 120HZ Qnix'es down to one, so I am familiar with them, but for work purposes the size versus resolution is the important part. A full 11x17 Schematic on a 30inch 2560x1600 monitor looks very similar to the actual paper as far as size of components, so in some cases you can get away with not printing the Schematic and actually work with it while it is on screen and get similar eye feedback. This is unfortunately impossible on a 16:9 27 inch monitor, since you need to scroll vertically a bit more and the smaller nature of the 27 inch takes away from the natural feel and appearance of pages and board lay outs. I am pretty sure the reasons above are the main reasons why 30inch monitors are still in the market and being offered.

. Oh and who cares about color quality... I am not a photographer and if I played games on this thing I would get fired As far as waiting for a better model, or having my work use the money for something better...well I kinda do want the 30inch for the reasons above and even if I did not, there is no possible way of getting something else. We are a gov funded research institute and things are pretty much set in stone unless you custom order something which my boss would not let me even if I wanted to. I have also asked about our catalog getting 4k monitors in the near future and the answer was a no because they are too expensive.
So they will allow me to order 2x30 inch monitors at $1500 retail for $3000 but a $3200 4k monitor is too expensive.... yeah it does not make sense, but it is the government, what are you gonna do...
