I have been looking, but can't seem to find any of the 30" 2560 x 1600 displays that are LED. Are they available yet?

The Samung XL30 (think that was it) has been available for years, but overpriced. There may be some others, but I can't think of one, nor would I worry about it.

With laptops, I can see the appeal of LED, but with desktop displays, especially at this pricepoint, the bit of extra thickness and power use isn't of much concern IMO. There's a 25% off deal going on the U3011 right now still IIRC, its not LED, but its a nice display at a reasonable price.

I been waiting for a new 30 led lcd, hoping one will come out at the same time with ivy bridge

Because using cheap edge lit LED backlighting in 1000$ displays isn't going to win any one over. RGB backlighting is too expensive for most people and local dimming cant be used in monitors either.

In short it wont be happening soon. If you want to learn about 30" displays head on over to TFT Central or PRAD and read a couple reviews.

Samsung has pretty decent local dimming on their edge lit panels like the UN55C8000 I was considering picking up, which alleviates the main concern w/ blacks. Would be nice if someone wanted a wall mounted ultra-flat monitor that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Why can't local dimming be used in monitors though? The circuitry should be internal to the display and not care about the input source, no?

That said, I agree, don't hold your breath and just go w/ a regular CCFL for now.

Local Dimming is expensive, not worth putting in a monitor as they try to get away w/o implementing the needed amounts of dimming zones in the current panels, which leads to flash lighting. Monitors are much smaller, so in theory they wouldn't need that many dimming zones and would be able to have a flash light free image. I'm sure it's possible, but no one is going to pay the premium that this sort of montior would demand, and it is kind of pointless as the 2nd generation C-PVA panels can all ready do 0.04cdm/2 black @120cdm/2 luminance and have better viewing angles.

The Samsung C8000's picture quality is still defated bu the older the Local Dimming sets: Toshiba 46SV670U/46SV685D and best plasmas in terms of overall image quality and gaming performance.

Where is Sonwdog when we need him? He has some pics that show just how bad LD can look when you have a small bright object on a dark background. It creates a halo arround the bright spot.

The new monitors are more energy efficient than there counterparts from years ago. 110 watts for new dell. Old ones where 180 watts if I remember correctly. So LED is less important.
