+30 ghz FTW

Just an FYI for you guys, I had an issue with a printer driver and folding. The company was spooling and sending over thousands of pages at a time and with the processor pegged at 100% it would slow the transfer down. So the printer wasn't running at full speed, since the pages wern't coming in fast enough. Prints at over 120 impressions a minute, I think.

This was an AMD X2 3800+ with 2gbs of ram box. Should have been able to handle anything. I am lucky that every box I have didn't get pulled. I wasn't available at the time this issue was uncovered to investigate, so I can't give you all much information on the driver and printer, and if running things at 80% would have fixed the issue. I just wanted to make everyone aware that some programs do weird things when the processors are pegged at 100%.



Edit: Things like this can seriously hurt a company monitarily and employee wise, and we need to be aware of how the computers and programs respond to being run at 100%. I just want someone to learn from my experiences.
 
As far as hardware is concerned, folding will not reduce the longevity/reliability of the computer in any way that will affect you, with these caveats:

1) This doesn't apply to software. The folding client is pretty well-behaved, but there are a few (isolated) situations where other, less-well-behaved software can choke.
2) As long as you have adequate cooling. There is a chance that you'll wear out your fans faster if they're thermally controlled. But fans are cheap.

What would marty do? Of course he's not going to run folding at 100% on a production server. If he runs the cheap boxes at only 75%, there's no way he'll go 100% on the server.
 
The % used on a production server makes no difference. Any "server" one would assume has adequate cooling etc. The problem arises, while running @ 1% even, in the past certain WU's flood the memory bus and render the server useless. This would be a moot point, but the AS (assignment server) has been know to assign WU's not in the class asked for by the client. Setting a server to normal WU's and ending up with large/QMD cores etc.

Simply having FAH on a critical box can/could/have (most rare) lead to problems regardless of the config.

On many of my boxes, it's a box inside a box with limited cooling.

MS Scout- interesting on the printing, logical thou. Other reports are on RAID rebuilds/BITS updates where FAH interfered with things.

I'm going to have to give this some thought. Right now I'm unsure what to do, and I sure as heck don't want to give up 800-1200 ppd from this box, especially since its highly overpowered for its application and I'm maintaining 20% free cpu cycles. I tend to think such a large percentage of idle threads would give it flexibility enough to handle BITS and other idle\load priority tasks but I'm going to want some time to think about this and perhaps do some more research in the the effects it may have.

For the time being, I'll leave it folding and see what happens. I'm at 5 days now and have seen no ill effects, although that certainly isn't enough time to see all the potential problems.

If it's small business server, most likely it is your DC as well as a bunch of other things. And the bad thing about SBS is you can't have multiple DCs, meaning if it goes down, you're SOL until you can bring it back up. Best advice is, if you can't afford to have it go down, don't put anything on it that you can't get tech support for. And [H] doesn't count as tech support in the boss's eyes ;)
Yup, yup, yup... As far as support goes I handle most of it and I've got a new employee handling the light duty stuff. I've got Dell contracts for the hardware but software is all me.
 
Stanford as put more safeguards in place to protect against the Assignment Server sending out incompatible wus to the client. There could be a mistake in the future, just something people have to be aware of.

The printing issue is really weird. I've never heard of it before my company addressed me on it. I couldn't argue against the fact that when F@H was turned off things sped up. I just have to shake my head at the driver programming people. Who would program a high performance printer driver to run at low priority? Maybe it's a Windows 2003 issue. My company told me they had problems later with that driver and they got a new one. Later this summer I'm going to monitor and see if this is an issue with any of the user machines who send to other printers in the plant. Just weird.

That one machine was over 400ppd. Grrrrr. I might have another 4 2.8ghz machines to borg though. :D

I've had this idea about a usb memory key that would autostart when installed into a windows system. It would be the simplest thing in the world to have it copy the files to a obscure location on the hard drive and install it as a service.

Or, network admins could push the software out to their systems any number of ways. Or, if you install the os and related software on the systems just use a ghost'd disk to bundle it with the rest of the software.

so, first week update.... Well, its actually 8 days of solid folding.

I've got 45 work units done for 9334 points, that puts me at rank 2486 rank and a member of the choosen. I'm looking to break into the top 1000 by the 5 week mark. Right now I've got this folding:

Is such a low score proper for this processor?

if you arent running it all the time...that sounds about right.

If it's 55-60ppd during the time you run it, yes, that's low. My Athlon XP 1800 gets 70-80ppd on crummy proteins, and my niece's Sempron 3100 gets 110ppd on crummy proteins. They're on 24/7, though. If you're not getting the production you need, there's a good chance that something's getting throttled because the laptop is acting as though it's on battery all the time.

I switched the power profile and the performance jumped to 120-135... That did it..

It is running at the times EMiii is posting 60~ ppd. Its probably really doing 10 - 15 if you counted downtime too.

EM3 PPD is based really by the protien...at work i cant range from >700ppd to <1000 ppd depending on what proteins are crunching at the time.
 
Currently i'm now averaging 2000 ppd and I'm about to add 4.5 ghz more... I'm still waiting to borg my friends 7.6 ghz, but when thats done i should be at or over 3k ppd... we'll see what it turns out to be, I'm expecting a lot tho. :)
 
bah... nothing ever works out the way I plan. I just last night got his pc's borged, and then I only got 2 \ 3 done since the one he's got as his htpc wasn't available when I dropped by. On a good not I did get to borg a 3500+ Athlon 64 from someone else. So, thats all good. I'm recompiling my stats and I'll repost here what the final number are. Looks pretty good right now.
