Question!, now that Kepler has released I am contemplating what I want to do to upgrade my video and finally start using all 3 of the 30's that I have.

So my thinking is that even with potential Driver issues am I still better going with AMD for an multi-monitor setup, because the 7970's and the 7990 are sporting 3gb ram per core, which is going to help me more with such a high resolution setup correct? (All the 680's I saw were 2gb...right?)


Also I was/am planing on grabbing a 7990 when they release or If it is a good idea, whatever Nvidia's 2-core card is. My Question here is since my 1156 chipset throttles to x8 when two cards are present will I still get throttled since the 7990 is xfire on one board?

It only takes one slot so It should still run at x16 right which is going to benefit me more then 2 cards on two slots both at x8?

Depending on the answer to the above question since I am going to try pushing 3 Dell 30's on one 7990, would I be better going tri-fire and getting a 7990 and a 7970 to go with? Adding in a 2nd card will definitely drop me down to x8 on both slots, So will this bottle neck hurt me more than adding in the other card will help?

Lastly, I figure I am going to end up upgrading to 2011 at some point just not in the immediate, right this second future, of course that is dependent on what I can do video wise with my current setup. I guess that will determine how soon I end up rebuilding my Rig...


If it matters, I am planing on running / running, D3, GW2, StarCraft 2, currently. I am also debating CS:GO but I may drop that down to a single monitor anyway...
 
Well, 3GB is always better at higher resolutions especially if you want to run high quality textures and any amount of AA. I'd still go with AMD if I were you (I have a similar setup and going to snag a msi lightning 7970 when it releases). Also the difference between x8 and x16 is negligible when it comes to pci lanes. Though technically a 7990 would be on a x16 pci slot, you have 2 gpus and therefore the same effect would happen as if you have two cards. If you want to go with two gpu's, two cards would probably be cheaper and give you more performance. A 7990 is rumored to be more akin to two 7950s as a 6990 was akin to 2x6950s and a 5970 was 2x5850s.
 
Thanks for the consideration, I may just wait it out and see what the price at release is for the 7990's and also see what kind of performance they are offering comparatively. Also with the 680's seemingly doing so well at the 500$ price point maybe AMD will drop prices to be more competitive, you never know :). Guess I am still in wait and see mode at the moment.

Because I have no experience with it, if i want to tri-fire a 7990 with a 7970, will the 7970 end up being down clocked? I believe all the "Leaked specs" show the two cores of the 7990's running slower then the single 7970's.
 
All, Pardon the rookie quesiton. If you have 3x30" monitors with mini display port connectors and 2x 7970 graphics cards in SLI mode, how are the monitors connected to the card? 2 monitors to the display port plugs and the third monitor to the DVI plug using an DVI to mini DP adapter? I'm under the impression that Eyefinity expects all the monitors to be connected to the primary card. I haven't been able to find any display port hubs. Thanks in advance for any replies
 
Unless your 30" monitors don't have DVI (not likely unless you got Apple Thunderbolt displays and they haven't released a 30" version yet) all you need is 2 DisplayPort-to-minDisplayPort cables and 1 dual-link DVI cable. And yes Eyefinity expects all the monitors to be connected to the primary GPU, which is essentially meaningless in your case as you plan on going Crossfire which automatically disables all the video outputs of all non-primary GPUs that are connected in Crossfire (video outputs for GPUs not connected are unaffected, eg. onboard graphics).

7 month old thread.

30" monitors are usually 2560x1600. Which means that the DVI to DP adaptor needs to be ACTIVE. active adaptors = $100ish.

unless you get an aftermarket 7970 with more then 2 mini dp slots, you're looking at something expensive.
