3 satas not raid????

on my motherboard i have 2 sata slots (sata1 and sata2) and i also have 4 more sata slots (raid 1,2,3,4) Asus K8N-E Deluxe

My question is: Can i have 3 satas ( using sata 1,2 and raid 1) and have them
set up like OS-sata 1 programs sata 2 and storage raid 1? without haveing to do a raid array
i'm assuming this would be jbod?

this is going to affect my drive buying

while it would not be JBOD, yes you can do that. Just make sure to install the "non-RAID" driver for the Silicon Image HDD controller.
 
Dude I have the exact same mobo and I was wondering the exact same thing ... scary :S :p

I saw an option in the BIOS that you could change RAID to SATA or disabled but I'm not sure if it's the 4 RAID ports .. and I can't check now because I'm at work.

Oh and drizzt81, what do you mean by "make sure to install the "non-RAID" driver for the Silicon Image HDD controller" What if I already installed the drivers ? I need to uninstall them and then reinstall with the non-RAID option ?

see how it says
"Silicon Image Serial ATA IDE Driver V1.0.0.2 and Raid Driver V1.0.0.7 for Windows 2000/XP/2003" on the asus download site? There are two drivers, one is for RAID operation the other one is just 'single disk' operation. I do not know the difference, but I assume that using the RAID-driver with a single disk and vice versa is a bad idea.

In the end, it's your choice to reinstall the driver or just give it a shot and see what happens.

Oh I didn't know they had 2 different .. I just used the CD when I installed them (or windows update) .. but that was a while ago.

I'll see when I'm at home later tonight and try with my secondary drive.

I'll report back.

If you can do it with 1 (in the RAID ports) I'll assume it'll work with 2 or more. As long as they are set in single SATA mode and not RAID mode.
 
I got my second hd to work in the RAID 1 port.

In the BIOS there's an option for the Silicon Image thing and there's 3 options: RAID mode, SATA mode and Disabled. I chose SATA mode obviously, then booted in Windows, uninstalled the drivers and then reinstalled (a couple time heh) them and then my hard drive appeared!

But, now next to my hard drive name in the device manager it's written: SCSI disk drive ... which doesn't make sense but who cares ? It's working so it's good enough for me. :p
