Ok, new system, 3 Caviar RE2.500s in an IcyDock hotswap 3 bay setup. Tight system case, had to remove the IcyDock fan (which they make easy and imply is perfectly acceptable, so long as your temps stay in line.) Which leads to the question - what is an acceptable operating temp for HDDs, particularly these? For some reason I can't get the IcyDock or the drives to report anything to system monitors, but it has it's own monitoring system on the backplane. There is an audible alarm that can be set for 45c, 55c or 65c. I have it set for 55c. After a week of use I was hitting the Raid Array about as hard as I'm ever going to hit it - copying 350gigs of media files (no, not p0rn :rolleyes: ) when the audible alarm starting kicking in intermittently (ie. every 30 seconds, then die off) - clearly the drives were peaking around 55c.

Is this an acceptable operating temp? Can I raise the alarm level to 65c and treat an alarm as a "time to shut down" signal? Or is 65c just too high to allow them to hit? My raptor bootdrive runs around 41c in the same system (not in the icy dock.) Obviously I know that lower temps are better - but what is an acceptable temp for HDDs these days?
 
55c isn't acceptable in my book. 40C is where it's at, max. Put fans in your system, so that you get better ventilation. Getting the OS to power down when the hard drives overheat would probably be difficult - get the temps to an acceptable level and then you don't have to worry about it.

What's your setup like? Can you post pics of the system?
 
well if 55c isn't acceptable 65c must be right out the window then... Keep in mind that the 55c is a one time thing - I don't expect I will be writing 300GB consecutively again - though i guess I will be reading it every once in a long while for off-site backup. Not talking about have the OS power down, talking about running over and shutting it down manually when the klaxon's start to ring, hatch style. - It's not going to be doing anything that would drive that much heat if I'm not there, and the resting temp is much lower.

It's in a TT Bach Case, P5B-E motherboard. The MB makes it impossible to have the IcyDock fan mounted. I could, if necessary, punch a grid of holes in the side of the case right at the rear of the IcyDock, but even fitting a fan in there, between the ID and the PSU (and cables) would be something. I guess the last solution, short of a new case (and I really do like this Bach and the media center) would be to punch those holes and mount the fan externally - I could get the quietest 120mm I could find. Will post pics when I'm back with the system.
 
How deep is the 5.25" bay area? I have an alternative bay suggestion, but it's quite deep and I'm pretty sure it won't fit.

Could you move the drives to another machine and access them over network? For media playing, 100 mbit is plenty - even DVD is only up to 10, and HD mpeg2 is usually under 20.
