Here's what I have: 3x 2TB WD EADS Green Drives.

I don't know a whole lot about multi-drive storage systems. I would like it to be network accessible, redundant (RAID 5?), gigabit ethernet, and portable. I'm going to be using it for document, music, and movie backup.

Am I stuck spending $300+ on something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822122010 ??

What's my best bet that's not too pricey?

I checked out some options but that Netgear NAS enclosure seems to be your best bet.

However, do you have a somewhat old computer laying around that can handle those drives?
The is a free OS called FreeNas and a lot of the members seem to like it a lot. I haven't used it but it's an option worth exploring.
If you choose FreeNas then it won't cost you a dime. Just some time.

You could build one. With some aluminum scraps, wood, and cut up a cheap small mATX case.

I don't have an extra computer, but I have some spare parts would consider building one if I could find a form factor about the size of that Netgear.

If you were to drop the Network capability you could go with a Mediasonic enclosures, heres a couple of models, one simple, and one with raid capability and usb3.

Mediasonic 3.5-Inch USB 2.0 and eSATA Pro Box 4-Bay Enclosure HF2-SU2S2 (Black) $108
Mediasonic USB 3.0 & eSATA 3.5-Inch 4-Bay Raid Enclosure 0/1/3/5/10 HFR2-SU3S2 $209

These are certainly temping. Looks like I can get raid for a decent price with one of these Rosewills: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132029
