3.8ghz bios settings for 965be

So I changed the bios to 200*19 and nothing else changed.

The bios vcore was at auto and according cpu-z it should be around 1.47-1.485v.

I ran Prime95 for 1h 20min at small FFT and the temperature never hit 53c.
It used to be 51-52.5c most of the time.

Ive tried 1.3875v but the PC restarted after 16min so I'm going to maybe hope for 1.41v.

The motherboard is M4a79t and I wonder if maybe I should change some other BIOS settings?

The memory is 2*4gb XMS3 1600 so the memory is even downclocked at 200FSB.

at 200x19 the ram should be at what ever you set it to.. you may have to manually set it to 1600mhz since they usually safe default to 1333. as far as voltage goes 3.8Ghz is typically in the 1.45-1.46v range, some chips higher some lower but thats usually a good starting point. if you can get 3.8Ghz stable under 1.5v and under 60C i'd definitely shoot for 4Ghz at around 1.52-1.53v just to see if the processor can do it.

As monkey said, make sure you tell your bios to go to 1600 on the memory, all my Asus ones for AMD have defaulted automatically at 1333 speed, as for the OC, keep playing with the volts you will probably need ~1.425v or a bit more depending on the chip to maintain 3.8, and close to 1.5375 probably to maintain a 4.0......what cooler are you using?

Thanks to both of you, I doubted that I can shoot for 4ghz on air but now maybe I'll try that.

The cooler I have is a Mugen 2 Rev B with push pull 120mm fans.
The temperature always was below 53c with 1h 20min of PRIME95 FFT small and AUTO vcore in BIOS(should be 1.48v) so I think it is a good result?

As for the ram I'll do that, should putting them manually to 1600 help with OC?

edit --> Considering I'm only playing with the multiplier and keeping FSB at 200, is vcore and the multiplier only things I need to change?

Yes, vcore and multiplier are the only things you need to change.

I would increase the NB frequency to 2400 mhz, and manually set the HT frequency to 2000 mhz. That should also result in a nice speed increase that you can actually feel on your computer.

52C @ 3.8Ghz with 1.48v is plenty of headroom for 4Ghz on air.. if its a C3 stepping 965 its good up to 70C when stress testing.. the 62C recommended limit is for C2 stepping processors. also i do not recommend using the auto setting for the voltage. you should manually set the voltage since the auto voltage setting can/will fluctuate every time you restart/start your system.

Damn did not know that about AUTO vcore in MOBO :(

Some good news is I had vcore at auto and memory 1600 in BIOS.
Put CPU to 19.5*200 ran PRIME95 small FFT for 2h 50min, the temperature reached ~55c

I propably need to run PRIME95 again this time putting VCORE at something like 1.48 instead of AUTO.

My suspicion is that AUTO vcore actually increases VCORE when needed and lowers it when not stressed but I could be wrong?

Nope. Auto vcore is usually the processor's default vcore. Some motherboards adjust the vcore to what it thinks will make the processor stable. Which is usually much higher than what is actually needed to make it stable.

If I remember correctly, my C3 Phenom II 965 did 3.8 ghz with 1.4v.

It failed 200*19.5 at 1.45v.

It did do 200*19 1.45v over 14h of PRIME95 when I turned it off.

I might try 1.48v and 200*19.5, when it passe 3.9 ghz it actually was AUTO vcore and not 1.48v so I could be wrong about it able to make 3.9ghz on 1.48v

even though it was on auto, the bios more then likely bumped the voltage up to 1.48v to keep the processor stable..

just keep raising the voltage til its stable.. once thats stable bump the multiplier and do the same processor for that. btw to save time i suggest running intel burn test, just to 5 or 10 passes, takes 1/4 the time and does a heck of a lot better job finding out of the processor is stable or not.

thanks for the suggestions, I will definitively use IBT as it seems better alternative.

I think I actually from here might decrease vcore and speed as I now going to OC 6950x2.

Yesterday I played AMD6950x2 Dirt3@5900*1080, cpu peak where: 80-85% on 2 cores other 2 75%+ <--- The absolute PEAK, most of the time cpu was 30-60% core load.

So even 3.2ghz PHII is enough to bottleneck 6950x2 2GB in Dirt 3.

The GPU's where 99-100% core load.

I'm definitively shooting for 4ghz or more if I ever upgrade to 850w PSU.

Atm I undervolt the CPU to 1.25v and stock speed so I can make slight OC to my 2 power hungry 6950's.

But I would obviously rather have 1.5v cpu and 4ghz+, I prolly have the right cooler for the job just need new PSU.

The CPU is 125w, If memory serves correct it is C3 so in that case 70c at 4ghz is reasonable, no?

the temp question is more of a personal preference thing....

I personally dont like my CPU's to hit 60c(on the AMD side), more from peice of mind and if they are at that high my room will be quite toast :D, however yes 70c is right near the "max" .... aim for ~65c as your max to have a little bit of wiggle room

i think im going to try to get my cpu to 3.8 usuing the coolermaster v8
