What is the advantage to using 1/4 inch VS 3.5mm if your source is 3.5mm to begin with? Should I go out of my way to get things that have a 1/4 inch drive?

What is the advantage to using 1/4 inch VS 3.5mm if your source is 3.5mm to begin with?

Nothing.
The advantages a 1/4" plug or jack have are a slightly larger contact area and better durability.

if your source has a 1/8" jack and that's what your headphones have there is no need to use adapters.

My headphones have a 1/4 inch source so yes I have to use adapters. I have the sennhieser HD-555's.

So the actual question is:
Will it hurt the performance of my headphones if I replace the 1/4" plug with a 1/8" one?

In that case the actual answer would be:

No, you may even notice an improvement when you get rid of that adapter. :p
