hi
i just bought this: http://sp-computerinc.com/ibm1272rpmex.html
my system meets all requirements.
1.67 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP on WinXP Home Edition.
The drive is a WD Caviar.
i plugged it into the usb port (probably 1.1, definitely not 2) and it recognized it. i choose the drivers that came on the cd with the drive, but it's listed as 'unknown device'. i've tried to update the driver through device manager, but no luck. i checked in the disk management part of computer management (in admin tools), and it doesn't list it as a drive. what steps did i miss, if any?

do i need a hi-speed usb host controller for it to work properly, and if so, what is that?

Some MB's USB ports have compatibility problems, I know this from my experience developing USB slave boards --- any device using anything above HID type EPs could have compatibility problem, my USB board acts as EP using Blocl Xfer, and it crashes on 2 out of 6 PCs I tried.
