3.4EE vs. E4300???

Wait a min... Are you going to keep the 478 motherboard ? If yes, you must forget about C2D and go for the 3.4EE.
However, for a new system with a new motherboard and such, get the C2D E4300 for sure.

Fry's currently has a E4300+ECS cheap-ass VIA chipset mobo for $149 (+tax), but you'll also need new DDR2 RAM and PCI-E video card. So youre looking at min $300. And that mobo wont OC worth a damn, and the cheapest mobo they have that will is the Gibabyte DS3 for ~$140. $450 would be more like it then.
I have a ECS P4M800proM from a Fry's combo that is quite stable and even overclocks a little, and a 775Dual-VSTA too. Both are good for the price, and will still drive a C2D past a any X2 let alone a Pentium. My Asrock only does 285MHz FSB, most do better ~300. Still with a E4300 that's over 2.5GHz and faster than a 6000+. Get the 4coreDual-VSTA it has the better ultra chipset.

e4300 = dual core and will beat the snot out of it in just about everything.
don't get me wrong the 3.4EE (galatin) chips rocked for their time. But they just can't compare to the power of Core's.
I've had both 3.4EE & Core 2 (e6600), and they just don't compare.
At least not when you overclock a Core 2 to around 3Ghz which almost all of them do. (maybe worst case 2.8Ghz-3Ghz) Anyway, get the Core 2 and a real PCIe motherboard. (965 based, not Via)

This is what I just ordered to allow me to upgrade in steps.....when I have all the required parts, I'll buy a real motherboard
In the meantime I can still use my DDR and AGP card to hold me thru till the wife looks the other way, and then I raid the checkbook......
I have the 3.4EE that I bought last week too....that was a mistake..Ill just throw it in my daughters system.....
don't get me wrong, its a killer chip, but not gonna hold up against ANY CD2 chip.....

It does 3.7 on my Max 3

But, I went the same route. Celery331+AsRock, then C2D, then BADAXE2! Now I just need to wait for a cheap DX10 card, and I'll be solid for a few years.

How is the Asrock board..?Mine will be here tomorrow....
But when they are selling the package of an E4300 and ECS mobo, for LESS than what any online retailer is selling the E4300 by itself, its a KILLER deal.
I just picked one up and will be selling the unopened MOBO, I figure if I get say $35 shipped, that means I got a brand new E4300 for $115.
I have that board in my second system, its a decent board but your crippled on PCI-E (4x), there are no cpu voltage adjustments so overclocking only goes so far also. For the price though, its not bad at all, but the C2D doesn't live to its full potential on such a board.

Please do not get an ECS board. As another member noted, they are a joke and I think they are junk.
I've got an Abit IP-95 with the VIA P4M-890 that is stable and runs well. It is running a Celeron D 336 also. A good basic machine and the motherboard was like $55 at Frys. The PCI-E is also crippled at 4x, but it is not a gaming machine...
/don't expect to OC it, and you'll be fine. I ran it with PCIe and DDR2, but the same chipset in my ECS HTPC run w/AGP and DDR perfectly.

Cool, Im not expecting it to OC..
Its just to hold me over till I get a better board...With the C2D price drops coming next month..now is NOT the time to be buying high end hardware
The price will be coming down considerably soon
