Hey all,

I have a 3.2ghz p4 which idles in the mid 50's. This is with the side of the case off and an ambient room temp of about 75 degress.

I'm assuming that this is a bit high for the side of the case being off and the heatsink being almost completely exposed to the ambient room temp and not case temp.

Or is it normal and I should not worry about reseating the heatsink / thermal paste?

assuming the first # is in celsius and the second # is in farhenheit,

yes, you probably need to reapply thermal paste and reseat the heatsink.

make sure you clean the old thermal paste off properly (ie, isopropyl alcohol, etc)

That is high for idle. You overclocking? What's your temps at load?

Ch1m3r4, your assumptions are correct.

It is not being oc'ed. Not sure about load temps yet.

what hs/f combo?

btw: welcome to the forums :p

We would require mobo type/manu and hsf for this type of question
Next time you got a question, give us some info bud and youll go far

Is that a 3.2e or 3.2c??? the 3.2e prescott could be running hot as most are finding out....

Also...

What motherboard are you using??? Abits report high numbers though mid 50's is way high and my 2.4@3.5 on an abit mobo reports 43c idle....

Lastly....

Are you using stock heatsink and stock thermal pad that came already applied to the heatsink???

my p4 2.4@3.2 w/ 1.650 [actual vcore]

idles around 40°C
and under load is around 53°C

you should be somewhere in that ballpark.. also i have an SP-94

try putting the side back on your case so you get proper airmovement inside the case.

My 2.4@3.0 1.525 vcore idles at 39C and max load is 44.50C
Thermalright SP-94 with 92mm tornado

*note those temps are with tornado at a more tolerable lvl*

now if i had my tornado cranked, im sure i could pull around 35C idle and around 40-41C load, but its not worth going deaf over, we will let ozzfest 2004 do that for me :p

It is the 3.2c. I am using the OEM intel heatsink with AS5.

I re-applied AS and reseated the CPU today and am getting the same temps. I would like to reduce them but don't know what to do.

I do have one theory though (let me know what you think)...

I have a lian li pc50 case which has a vertical psu mount.

My psu has a dual fan and the fan is about 1 inch away from the top of the heatsink fan. The psu is sucking and the fan on the cpu is blowing. Could this be causing some irregular turbulance in the air movement? There is also a 80mm blowhole above the zif which on or off doesnt seem to change the temps.

switch the fans so the are both going in same direction and see if that changes anything.

it is possible that the fan directions are causing some woes

Your board could be misreporting the temps. There's no obvious reason as to why you're running that hot. I'm running the stock heatsink with AS5 on stock volts with 2.8C@3.2 and I never climb above 60C when running Prim95. It idles at about 35C and doesn't go above 50C gaming.
