3.2E SL7PN

That's a crummy core. 103W TDP is the worst for that speed grade/core. There are always exceptions, but you would be better off with an 89W core like the SL7E5 or SL7KC.

The bottom of the CPU has many capacitors. The 30 cap models are generally more desirable, but your 103W TDP CPU is rated as a bottom bin model by Intel.
 
wouldn't the low voltage make it a better overclocker though ? There are many out there with an sl7pn that have reached 4Ghz ..
 
That's not a low voltage CPU. The 103W TDP implies it runs at the upper multi-VID range.
 
it has a lower voltage becuase its a prescott, not a northwood - its a 3.2E. prescotts generally run very hot, and id wager youd be very lucky to hit 4ghz with it.

There are 89W Prescotts in socket 478. I listed 2 above (SL7E5 or SL7KC). IMO, he'd be lucky to hit 3.6GHz on air with that SL7PN.

My P4 551 (3.4GHz Prescott 1MB core w/EM64T) is an 84W TDP processor. The NW 3.2 CPUs were rated at 82W TDP.
 
I'm not planning to use air at all. I'm gonna be using a Maze 4.

I'll hook it up tonight and see what I can get out of it. If my motherboard is OK. I sent it for RMA and they returned it saying nothing was wrong with it.

Plus I have OCZ Plat. Rev 2 memory.

i realise this - i was under the impression that he thought he had a low voltage northwood. also, at the same TDP, a NW will run cooler due to the size of the die. s478 prescotts also ran hotter than the 775 ones due to voltage signaling of the chipset (i believe that was the reason, feel free to correct)

Later revisions of prescotts (600 series especially) are good.
But the early ones only clocked about as high as Northwoods, but did it at a much higher wattage/heat!!

Now if you have a 640 3.2 Prescott, I'd say you had a good chance of 4.0-4.2Ghz.
 
I know it's a Prescott if you're talking to me. I didn't know I typed 3.2C until now. I bought a prescott because they achieve better results at over 3.6ghz ...

These results contradict what you guys are saying. I'm sure I would need good cooling but I'm already water cooling and if the Maze 4 is not good enough, I'll be getting a TDX soon.

E0s and N0s the THE BEST OVERCLOCKERS, i cant believe you guys were giving him crappy info on how it couldnt reach 3.6. That chip will run as cool as a 3.2c even with its wattage. It doesnt like too many voltage, but i bet if you took the vcore to 1.48 you could hit 4.3.
 
I run my 3.2E E0 4.32GHz@1.500v or it's too hot (since it's summer time) 4.21GHz@1.450v. So far I've been able to achieve 16*278FSB on a very cool night.

well, I was trying to overclock the cpu last night. I got to 4.1 and the voltage just kept on fluctuating back and forth between 2 voltages. Can't tell you which ones because I'm not on the pc right now.

Will keep u posted later on.

Did you even read the thread? He'd be lucky to get that high with regular air cooling. He's using water cooling. Big difference.
