I have been trying to OC my new 3.2E and once i hit 3.9GHz its not stable, getting errors in Prime95, or just plain crashing...this is before the temp even breaks 55 degrees while at 2.8 it will hit 60 degrees and be stable...anyone have any suggestions?

how are you going about overclocking the CPU? are you having to up the FSB for the CPU to increase in speed? are you using a ratio so that the FSB is around the 800mhz speed but the CPU's speed will increase? plz specify on how you are overclocking. thnx

.. You mean the multiplier, and only AMD's are multi unlocked.. you should know that based on your rig.

Anyway, try pumping the vcore a bit.

yea the FSB is like 950...changing the vcore was the first thing i did, i have pushed the vcore from about 1.25 to about 1.5 and no changes what so ever...

Your FSB is closer to 975mhz (244 set in the BIOS) to achieve that. The CPU locked multiplier is 16 for that procesor. To calculate the Quad-Pumped bus speed multiply you BIOS setting by the multiplier (244x4=976).

You need more voltage to achieve the OC. Looking at your other thread, your RAM may also be holding you back. Try to relax the timings, up the VDIMM, or set the RAM divider to 5:4 in the BIOS. I would up voltages first and it that doesn't work, back off the VDIMM and change the RAM divider.

actually i did know this. but when i trouble shoot computers i dont assume anything. i get the facts then i go from there. assuming can make things wose. thats why i asked such obvious questions.

the ram was allready at 5:4...and i have taken it beyond 200MHz so i know thats not the problem. I cranked the vcore up to about 1.5 and you were right! I booted XP running 4.0GHz, but there is another problem, as always.

The prescott throttles at 70 degrees. It hits 60 degrees in my system, but a quick glance into my sig will show you i have an IC7-G mobo, notorious for having a 10 degree overshoot on the CPU temp. So the computer says 70 but in reality it is only 60, but the CPU thinks its 70 and throttles the vcore, making my system crash...isnt that just great?

couldn't you just change the shutdown temp in BIOS? mine doesn't shut down till 85C

what were your settings and RAM and such to get 4.0?

I turned off the "CPU Thermal Throttling" in bios then booted to 1.5 v and 3.9 GHz it keeps on throttling!!! WTF? and it wasnt even near 70 degrees this time in abit aq...

Right now at a stable 3.7 i have 928 Mhz bus speed, 1.4 v vcore, and the mem is 185.7.

4.0GHz gives 1000MHz bus speed, and 200MHz memory

I would say it's time to go h2O my friend!

The CPU throtteling is one reason I didn't go with a prescott CPU. That, CPU temps in general, and at the time, the price.

yea ive actually been looking for a H2O system for relatively cheap...in fact im trying to trade my 9600XT for an H2O setup right here at the [H]!...(shameless plug)

i suppose that is what mine was doing to.. anything i set above 3.9 on the fly it restarts even though the heat isn't above the shutdown

I've had randome restarts too, until I relaxed RAM timings and upped core voltage a bit. Try those first.
