3.2E and IC7-G Temps...

I went from an Athlon XP 2500+ to a 3.2 Prescott and this Abit Mobo. I know the prescotts are supposed to run hotter than normal, but this concerns me:

Idle, I sit around 54-54 degrees C. When I run an installation or play a game, the sucker spikes up and gets to 68 or 70 degrees. Ok, that's pretty damn hot if you ask me. And I have never seen a proc spike that high when under load.

I'm wondering if this is something I should worry about. It is a fairly neatly sorted case (wires) and it is an Antec P160 (2 120mm fans). I'm using a Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu HSF with AS5. So it should have descent airflow... and yes the front fan is intake and the back is exaust.

I was having freezing problems running doom and would have to manually reboot. I was thinking about using the stock HSF with the chip to see if that does anything different.

I'm using a 6800 ultra vid card and it runs at a stable 58-60 degrees.

Does maybe too much AS5 cause the heatsink to not absorb the heat as well? I know when I touch the heasink on my vid card it is pretty warm, but when I touch the heatsink on my proc it is not near as hot as the vid card.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Reinstall HSF, trying the stocker to check performance could be a good indicator too.

But if its reading 70C and you don't think it feels hot to the touch then I'm going to go with improper HSF seating/pressure. Check it out.

Peace.

Sheesh... quick response :D Thanks. I love [H] :D

I will give that a shot tomorrow, unfortunately too late tonight. But since it spikes that high, is that a good indication that the HSF is installed improperly? There wasn't much to it, the directions were pretty cut and dry. But who knows, I'll have to check it out. Anyways, thanks.

If anyone else has anything to say about it, feel free to pump me full of ideas :D

well just make sure those metal bar things haven't slipped out of the retention brackets on the motherboard

and you are using the 2 INSIDE holes, right?

abit ic7's read temps higher than actual, i have a northwood and i notice temps being read 8-10C higher than actual. the latest bios release is supposed to fix it but it doesnt change a thing for northwoods. i have heard that people with prescotts have noticed it to be a little more accurate. give that a try.

heh, as opposed to outside holes? I will have to double check that.

I think that it is reading accurately, just because my system runs great till doom starts up and the temps skyrocket. At least I have some things to check

I just updated to 24. I did see that 25 was recently released, so I'm gonna need to do that. I don't even know what version it was when I first got the board. First thing I do when I get a new board is update the bios

I have a new IC7-G, a PresHot 3.0E running @ 215 FSB (3.2), a Zalman CNPS-7000CU with Artic Ceramique, and an eVGA 6800 GT.

My CPU idles in the mid 40's, and runs mid 50's while gaming, Prime95-ing, etc.

That sounds more like it. I would be a happy camper at those temps.
What kind of case do you have and what kind of cooling?

I've got a new Antec SOHO-II tower. I replaced the fans on the rear with Vantec ThermoFlow fans, and added a fan on a rheo on the front panel, right in front of the drive bay. I've turned the front panel fan down to where I don't hear it, but I do get a nice gentle flow of air right through the bay and towards the vid card / CPU HSF. The eVGA runs high 50's / mid 60's while gaming.

I ordered rounded cables from the egg for the build - and, I'm pretty anal about looming and cable tying all the PSU cables such that the case is very open and the airflow is as good as I can make it. Cool and quiet were my goals.....

Good luck - B.B.S.

That case is pretty much identical to my old case, but too damn loud for me.... I know my vid card is running the same temps as in the old case, so this new one seems to be doing the job.

I've sure been happy with these Vantec ThermoFlow fans. They have thermistors on them, so when used as exhaust fans, they speed up as the case temp goes up, and slow down when things cool off a bit. The front panel fan, normally the noisiest fan in the system, was slowed down a lot by using a rheo so it's very bearable. The Zalman is run "wfo" without the little Zalman rheo....seems quiet enough.

.....could be I've gone deaf from all the years of live sound / rock and roll / etc....:D

Good luck - B.B.S.

Well, mine is not a Vantec, it's a generic copycat. That could have something to do with it. Plus it's pretty heavy, I think the outside of the case is pure steel, heh. But almost identical as far as looks go.

Ok, tried reseatting the HSF in my sig, still getting up to 70 degrees, Room temp... about 75-80 degrees F. idle, i'm sitting between 56-58 with a 34 case temp. Under load, playing farcry, I'm getting up to 70.

I put on the stock HSF and it's doing the same damn thing. I have some pretty descent cooling, check the origional post. Is this too hot for a prescott???? I know they get hot, but jeez... jackup up 13 degrees under load? That's a little nuts if you ask me.

I'm going to get a another intake fan to see how it goes, but crap, I don't want this thing to burn down on me in a month. Am I worrying over nothing?

Ok, I got a beefy 120mm 3100rpm beast of a fan and guess what... it lowered my case temp down about 5 degrees C, but the cpu temp is still doing the same thing. And to top it off..... I started up doom and got this:

WTF does this mean? Does a funked proc do something like this? Do I dare suggest this is a video *choke* card issue? Oh damn this could turn into a real nightmare

I'm going to post in the video card forums also to see what people think. Should I trade this proc for a different one? Does the mobo have any influence on how hot the proc runs? Everythings in my sig :D BTW at this point I'm using the stock HSF and it runs exactly the same as the zalman did.

Any input is appreciated, I need to knock this thing out.
