Which is better for gaming and overclocking. Which one would you recommend and your opinions.

i have a msi neo 875p so im assuming that the northwood would work better with my board

well the temps of the presscot are really high so it depends if the motherboard can handle it ...

as for the o/c: over 3.6 the presscot is better so i'm assuming you will reach over 3.6 so I would go with the presscot ... I just hope you have good cooling ...

I got the preshott and it depends, if you have 875 then the Northwood is better. Unless you have 915/925/, get the Northwood. A lot of factors to consider here, but overall I had the same decision to make, decided to go with "newer is better", and wish I would have got the Northwood now.

I notice that Northwood 3.2s are becoming scarce. Is there a 3.4 Northwood? If so has anyone seen a reliable online joint to buy it at?

i have the exact same problem, i can't find a 3.4c northwood processor anymore. that's fustrating, can anyone help us?

If you can get a 3.2C at a reasonable price I'd say get it. A 3.2E will likely overclock better but the temps will be alot higher. I've personally had it with my 2.8E (in sig), I had it oced to 3.5ghz during the winter but have had to downclock it to 3.3ghz. And this is with good air and good airflow. Idling in the mid 50Cs and hitting 70ish underload just makes me cringe :(

If you have decent water cooling or anything better go with prescott, otherwise northwood IMO.

A 2.8e should NOT be getting such high temps... My estimate would be mid 40's for idle and low 60's load. Unless its 40C room temperature or something.

IMO go with the prescott as long as you have decent cooling. I just upgraded my 2.8 northwood to the 3.2 prescott and have it overclocked to 3.78ghz with a cpu temp at 35c. I do have the thermalright xp-120 and a panflo M1A fan with it but I wouldnt have it any other way right now, unless I had watercooling.. :D

the prescott will generally perform better at stock speeds. better architecture, sse3, etc. dont be surprised to have ur case temps rise a couple of degrees. you'll also need better cooling for that prescott chip.

I'd go for the prescott. As for temps the lga775 chips don't run that hot. I've got my 520 2.8 clocked up to 3.5 and my load temps top out at 55C. Just make sure to get some AS5 and take a long hard look at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 for a quiet cooling solution. Myself and other people on this board have had great results with this heatsink and it's a heck of a lot quieter than my old 7000alcu more or less the stock intel heatsink unit. Here's a link to the Freezer 7 thread:

Not only that, but my chip has a TDP of 115W and the new J revision chips are supposed to have a TDP of only 84W so if you're lucky they should run like 5C cooler than my setup is running right now. If I were you I'd pick up a 530J, a Freezer 7, and some AS5. You won't regret it I promise.

Go for the prescott, my 3.0e has a decent temp and its a socket 478 chip, 775 is supposed to be a tad bit cooler as well, its not that drastic of a temp increase, alot of people think a cpu has to run below 30c when these prescotts run just fine at higher temps.

Why does everyone say the Prescott performs better? The only thing I see where it should is with regard to SSE3. When I run my 2.8C@3.7, the numbers from Sandra at least shows it clobbers my 3.0E@3.7. Granted I am running my 2.8 with the FSB 10MHZ higher, but when I say clobber, I do mean clobber. I can't remember the exact numbers, but particularily in the math numbers, the 2.8C was at least 5000 points higher than the 3.0E. As far as heat, neither chip seems to have a heat problem but I do have a nice case and an SP-94 with 2 stacked 92mm quite fans.

Since I am able to get such a nice oc from my 2.8c, is there any reason to keep this 3.0e in there?

s478 and prescotts just don't go together. I've reseated my sp-94 with artic ceramique very well. My case has good airflow with rounded cables and 5 case fans and the room temp is usally in the 20-25C range. System temp is typically mid 30s. At stock speeds I idle in the low 50s and get into the high 60s under load. Now at 3.3ghz with voltage at 1.41 in bios (highest 1.36v actual) its mid to late 50s idle 70ish load :(

Weird. I'm running my 3.0E@3.7 with 1.48 vcore and idle at 42 and max under load never above 60c. I really do think my case cooling has everything to do with this though because before I cut a hole and added a 120mm side fan, even my vid card had problems due to the extra heat the 3.0E added to my case.

What are your room temps like? Taking off the side of my case only drops my temps by like 5C :(

Well, it's winter time here and I am in the basement so I'm sure that helps. Hardware Doctor shows:
System 28c
CPU 42.5c
PWM 33c

My guess is that this room is about 74-75F.
