I used sandra soft a while back and CPU-z posts the same information too.. Whats the difference between a "ES" cpu and a normal northwood cpu because i have and ES cpu.
 
ES = Engineering Sample.

If you actually have one of these, check to see if you can change the muliplier on it... if so you got a real desireable CPU.

I can change the multiplier from 15 all the way down to 12. is lower good? or higher good? can you direct me to a site that explains multipliers and its effects?
 
Well any ability to change the multiplier on a P4 is good. Does it also have Hyperthreading?

Changing the multipler changes the speed of the CPU because the speed of the CPU is attained by multipling the FSB times the multiplier.

The reason people like higher multipliers is because you can just adjust that to overclock your CPU.

The reason people like lower multipliers is because you can raise your FSB higher and keep your CPU at a speed it is capable of running.

So both are good.

I would prefer (if I could only have one of the choices) to raise my multiplier and OC instead of lowering it :)

How did you get the "ES" CPU?
 
i ordered it at some online store oem... and i didnt know until i ran sandra tests and CPU-Z keeped on giving me this ES logo at the end of the name.. Sandra told me that it was an engineering sample and that i should return it. I emailed company and they said that it should not be and that it would not hurt me performance wise from retail. So there you go i have an ES chip. The multiplier is the highest it can go "15" right now and that was default. I can only decrease the multiplier to 12 i think. well i have pc2700 ram right now (kinda bad i know) but is it better for me to lower the multiplier and up the FSB then?
 
Since you have PC2700, you actually are limited by your memory, depending on how well it overclocks. Generally you want to stick with a higher multiplier, and drop it if your memory can keep going.

nice! you have to buy a whole system or just CPU? Where did you order?
 
i do not remember the website.. it was a long time ago. I ordered just the CPU oem.. and it must of been a mistake because even the store that i ordered it from didnt even know it was an ES chip. i guess i lucked out
 
are people really into this type of chip. i have not any interest for this type chip on ebay or forums
 
Nice! An engineering sample CPU is very desireable in the Intel world, you could very well get a 3.2 or 3.4Ghz CPU if you wanted to trade with somebody on this forum!
 
i was thinking about it.. sad thing is my mobo is supports only northwood cpu's and northwood cpu's are not exaclty mainstream anymore lol.. maybe ill trade my cpu and mobo as a combo.. thanks for the ideas man
