3.0C or 3.0E for overclocking?

Well, I got myself a Prometeia Mach1, and suddenly my old p4 doesn't cut it anymore! I am going to get a new chip, and was just wondering which one you guys think overclocks better, the 3.0C or 3.0E? There seem to be good batches of 3.0C's (SLZ65 or SL6WU) but the 3.0E seems to have more consistent overclocks. I am still unsure of which to pick (I don't care that the 3.0E is a bit hotter). Also, do you think its worth it at all to go for a 3.2C or 3.2E?

I would say go for the E. I got it to o/c to 3.6 on stock air @ 50-60C :/.
 
I would take teh C as it runs cooler allowing for more volts, is more efficient clock for clock, and will probably oc almost as well if not the same. ALso you wont have to worry about the temperture in your room going up a bunch when you game.
 
I'd go for the C. I have a 3.0c. It will only oc to 3.6Ghz (240fsb).

however, I have a 2.8c that will o/c to 3.78Ghz. Both are on air.

I think my 2.8c would go higher, but I think my AI7 shoots craps at anything above 270fsb. If I go to 271fsb...I can't load windows, but at 270 I can prime till I'm tired and play games all night without a hitch.

It's luck of the draw, but I'd say if you're going for a 3.0c, then look for one with 30-caps underneath. My 3.0c has 12 and it doesn't o/c for crap. My 2.8c has 30-caps and I couldn't be more happy :)

he wont have to worry about temps with his cooling setup probably. i heard the C still excels the E in games, but not to sure about that thouhj. i just heard.

So does it really matter about the 30caps? I've read both good and bad things. I have a vapochill LS to overclock with and I want a 3.2C that can go high. I've found one with 12caps (SL6WK or WU not sure), and one with 30 caps (SL6WE). Not sure which to get. I know my memory can do 292FSB stable because i have my 2.4C stable @ 1:1. I want a cpu that will go up near 270+ @ 1:1 (either 3.0 or 3.2... prefer 3.2). Any help would be great.
 
Well, I decided to get a 3.0c because its better for what I do the most - game. I got a Malay 3.0C SL6WK, so hopefully I can get 4.0+ with it :) Taodragon, the 30 cappers usually overclock better than the 12 cappers, but this is not the case every single time. However, given the choice, I would go for a 30 over a 12. The SL6WK I'm getting is a 30 capper, I'm fairly sure.
 
Let us know what kind of overclocks you end up getting with that and the mach1, I've been interested to know by how much that beats watercooling...

Will do. The chip should come tommorrow or friday, so I'll have some fun then :) I haven't had a really good chip in a while, so hopefully this bad luck will change. Taodragon, AFAIK the SL6WE is a bit newer stepping and overclocks a bit more on avg. than the SL6WG.
 
It has been test and proven that the Northwood core, even though having less cache is still faster then the new prescott.

well thats just making my decision so much easier. It's stepping is D1, 30 Caps, sSpec Number is SL6WE. Think 1.7-1.75V is too much to overclock this puppy with? Using a Vapo LS to overclock. Can try with Hydrocool water cooling before using the LS, just for comparison.

Well, I doubt you'll even need to go that high if you get a good chip. My 2.8c will do 270fsb @ 1.66v. I can't get above 270fsb no matter what voltage (yes, I've even tried 1.8v just to see...it was a no-go) so I think I may have hit the limit of my board. My ram will do more than 270fsb also.

If you do go that high, I don't think you'll have a problem with a Mach1. People on extremesystems.org are running 1.75 and above with VPC cooling systems without problems.
 
Well Im gonna see how far my new chip will go on stock voltage before upping it, but I don't plan on running anything higher than 1.7v However, 1.75 is usually considered safe enough for vapor systems.
 
i got a 3.0C 2 days ago and i'm running at 3.85 on stock air cooling (Air Conditioned room though) 33Celcius idle 45 with a load, i'm prety sure i could get 4ghz with better ram, so far this 3.0c seems to be a winner

What stepping and pack date did you get? Sounds like a very nice chip, let us know what you max out at. Looks like no chip for me today, stoopid FedEx :(
 
If you have hardcore cooling, go for the E. At high clock speeds that thing is insane. Otherwise, get the C. It overclocks well too, but if you could get the E to like 4 ghz you'd be in heaven.

Argh, looks like my chip wont come till monday. Damn you FedEx! Only you can take 3 days to deliver a chip that is 4 hours away :(

Es run hot even without OC'ing, so OC'ing them makes it even worse. When you open the E processor the box comes with this yellow paper stating proper cooling is required for this processor, which the C doesn't have. Thus making the C liekly to OC a bit better as it can take the heat better.

and the review here at [H]ardOcp had the E for OC'ing and their test setup of an IC7Max3 and the E processor was hot enough to melt the plastic foam blocks they used as stands. Which isn't suppose to happen.

I try to keep my processor under 50C. But seriously I think the best P4 OC'er would be the 2.8C or the 2.6C. I have my 2.8C at 3.36GHz.

I think the 3.0c is the best ocer right now if you are willing to spend $200. I am happy with my 3.9ghz oc with my 3.0c and am considering selling it to a friend who I am building a pc for and getting a 3.2c just to try to get above 4ghz stable. It does run hot even with a sp-94 and 92mm fan, like 60c load according to abit.
 
Well here are the results so far, and they're looking good :)

3.95 100% stable 1.55vcore
4.05 100% stable 1.60vcore

My damn memory is holding me from going further, especially because my motherboard has known incompatibilities w/ Winbond CH-5 and its 5:4 divider gets broken around 260fsb. Oh well, Im going to get some PC4400 sometime this week and see what I can get. What do you guys recommend for an Abit IC7-Max3, OCZ EL Gold PC4400 or Corsair LL PC4400?
 
Just to let you know about the IC7-Max3 board... it has a know memory issue. Basically the board doesn't provide the correct voltage when VDIMM is set between 2.9-3.1. It will fluxuate very badly. Most of the new boards have this fixed though. We pointed this out to Abit and they said they would repair the boards but some still get new boards with this error. Also, VTT doesn't track correctly for voltages 2.9+. This was recognized by Abit since we provided proof, but they decided not to fix this issue. JEDEC standard specifies that VTT = .5 * VDimm. At 3.2V vdimm, VTT will measure 1.4v (2.8V vdimm) and should be 1.6V. There is a fix for this that MadCat over in Abit forum's has instantiated. I have the vdimm and vtt fix in my board and it does help in overclocking. With just the vdimm, i was able to go to 270 @ 1:1, then with the vTT fix I hit 292fsb. All this with OCZ PC4000 Gold. I would recommend OCZ memory over corsair. I've had both and I prefer OCZ. If you need the board fixed, you can either do it yourself or contact me. I have fixed many boards in the Abit forums.

I don't get anyone would get a CPU that's already at a high frequency and OC it. The 2.8C is cheaper than the 3.0C and it clocks just as good. I'd rather save the extra say $40-45 CAD between the 2.8C and the 3.0C and get something else like a bigger HDD, mods or other. This is mainly cuz I don't care for an OC of near 1GHz, I'll settle for 500MHz.

Besides 3ghz+ is more than enough for most people. Ohwell, it's just my bad luck that my P4C800-E DLX maxes out on me at 3.36GHz on air. I was thinking of getting an IC7MaxIII for cheap at work and try a better OC but it aint worth my time and money, I'm happy with anything over 3GHz.

In my experience, P4C800E usually would OC few mhz better than IC7G (max2). You are not limited by board at 3.36ghz... its the CPU/cooling/memory. Even cheap boards I've seen does 3.4ghz fine on my 2.6c (even higher FSB than what you mentioned).

I got a 980Mhz oc on my 2.8c with an Abit AI7 (270fsb @ 1.67v on air cooling). That board is generally considered in the "budget" category since it's only around $100....often less. However, I couldn't be happier with it...especially with a near 1Ghz oc.
 
I'm selling the 30 cap 3.2C SL6WE I just got today. Came home to a sick dog and vet bill is outrageous. Chip hasn't been installed at all. Retail box w/papers and heatsink. If anyone is interested let me know.

My 2.8c oced to 3.5ghz and I sold it to a friend who I built a system for. I then paid an extra $35 for a 3.0c. The 3.0c is a 30 capper and OCs great. I run it at 3.9ghz 24/7. Now why would I spend $35 for an extra 400mhz? It is because my 6800 GT is CPU limited and DOOM III comes out soon. Need I say more.

i don't think that the board is holding you back...my P4C800 dlx is giving me 270fsb
