I have the Intel D875PBZ, 1 gig pc3200 Corsair XMS, all the requirements met for an 800 MHz FSB processor. Should I do this upgrade? I have the money, it was just birthday money, and some games are running a little sluggishly.
 
Get yourself a solid video card. There are no games out right now where a >3GHz processor is a bottleneck. If the games are sluggish in your current system right now, no cpu upgrade will give you a performance increase.
 
well, i have a 5900 Ultra.

Getting a better video card is another consideration, since ATi kills Nvidia at AA/AF.
 
Remember that i will be also going from 533 MHz FSB to 800!

Now, is it still not worth it?
 
What kind of games are you playing that are sluggish with a 3.06HT P4, a gig of ram, and a 5900 Ultra? Wanna try reformatting or different drivers?
 
you need to change to a lower resolution and less eye candy and turn aa down and it wont be sluggish.. damn to slow that kinda system down you much be crunching 8xaa 8xaf + 1600x1200

Well, here's another incentive to upgrade something .

I just got 4703 3dMark 03 points, using drivers 56.72.

3.06 GHz
Intel D875PBZ
1 GB Corsair XMS
SB Audigy 2
GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
 
I really wouldn't upgrade that CPU, that would be a waste. Two better alternatives though, if you really are in the mood for upgrading would be to wait for the NV40 (it's probably less than a month away), or get a new motherboard and overclock that CPU. You could probably get that 3.06 up to 3.4 ghz for much less than buying a 3.4 P4C. Now granted it won't be running on an 800mhz bus, but say $140 for new overclocking board vs $400 for a whole new CPU, and you tell me which seems like a better deal.

So the CPU isnt the bottleneck...

How can you tell? How can you tell if its actually the video card thats the bottleneck?
 
it's definitely not the cpu or bus speed man. first off run memtest and make sure your ram isn't faulty. i would have said it was your video card too, but you shouldn't be having problems with a 5900 ultra unless that is faulty. try updating and reinstalling your video card drivers. as with what the other guys said as well, maybe your game screen resolution is to high, what are you running it at? that will make a HUGE difference right there along with aa being up to high. also make sure that your performace settings for the card are set to aggressive. default settings are at normal and changing them to aggressive i have noticed makes a very big difference. if you don't already know, do this by right clicking desktop, click properties, click settings tab, click advanced tab, then click the tab for your video card. last also like said before, what kind of hard drive are you running? download and run a diskspeed program and make sure your hard disks are spinning as fast as they should be. maybe you have a faulty drive. it's one of any of those things, could be as simple as the resolution, but it's not the cpu man. 3.0/533 bus is plenty for gaming. unless your processor is faulty? run prime95 too and find out.

Hey dude, what vcore, vdimm, and ram timings are you using to get that overclock if you don't mind me asking? I can't seem to get stable over 2.64 :( I think maybe it's my board because it doesn't support bus speed over 533. I'd still like to try more though. Otherwise, you think that could be my problem? Aside from getting new and faster ram.

lol, you want me to add that sig virus to my sig man?

Do steppings really matter? Anyways if they do I have a C1 stepping which every seemed to think overclocked good for P4B's. I had to increase my vcore a tad to get it above 2.9ghz, it's at around 1.625 (varies a little though 1.62-1.65). My vdimm is at 2.7, but I had to go with less aggressive timings to get my ddr-333 to almost 400mhz. Timings are 2.5/3/3/8. I would have prefered to run my CPU at 3.15ghz (166mhz FSB) with a 1:1 ratio on my ram (then I could use way tighter times), but the CPU failed prime in two seconds. It could be your ram, probably the best way to varify this is to go with looser timings when overclocking. It could also be either your motherboard or CPU, kind of hard to tell which it could be though.
Oh and you don't have to add that sig virus in, I just thought it was hillarious with the middle fingers when I originally saw it.
 
eh. If you already have the 3.06, don't bother getting the "c", it's just a waste of money...not too much of a difference. if you're dead set on upgrading, wait for a few months for all the new stuff to come out so the prices of "c"s will plummet (hopefully).

Get the 9800pro, like we suggested in the other thread...

Cool, thanks dude. I had a whole reply typed up last night for this, took me like 20 minutes and then my computer just rebooted all by itself!!! LOL dangit! You're right, I'm sure it's all 3, the ram, mobo, and the proc, I could have better of each and be better off, but looking for the weakest link, I think it just might be may ram like you say. I was a noob last year when I put my computer together so I did what most noobs would do, without thinking it mattered I went ahead and bought generic ram!! :rolleyes: Yeah I know I know, well I'm kicking myself for it now. I'm thinking I could probably sell my gig for about 75 bucks and then buy a 512 chip of hyperx pc3500 for around a benjamin on ebay. I think that sounds like a fair component swap for cheap. I'll miss having a gig, but that will just be temporary. It's not all the time that I require it so I can manage for a trade off on better performance.

About the timings. Cool yeah, I've tried looser timings and I was able to get a higher clock, but I couldn't get it stable. Plus I noticed that windows, my programs, and my data ALL load WAY faster with tighter timings and a lower clock. You should try it. Not so much the CAS, but more so the tRP and tRCD. Lowering my timings down to 2-2-2-7 gave me those fabulous program loading results, as same goes with 2.5-2-2-8, no difference between the two really. But it runs unstable with those low timings, so I had to loosen them a bit.

Talking more about overclocking, I've noticed that my system only achieves good results with the ram running equal to the bus or greater at 4:5 like your doing yourself. But not less. And giving I can't get my ram stable over DDR354, that doesn't leave me much room for a bus increase. My multiplier is 18 and my stock bus is 133. So with DDR354 being as high as I can go on my ram, that leaves me stuck at 146 for a maximum bus. Pretty wimpy. I can go up to 152 bus at 1:1 but it fails prime in a second. So I guess that just pretty much explains it then huh. If I get ram that can run stable at DDR450 lets just say with an overclock, then I could probably juice my bus up a lot more huh. Would you happen to know though if the bus limit ratings for a mobo come into effect that much? Since my mobo is rated at 533bus and not 800? Just curious. Of course like most of us, I plan to buy a bunch of new peices for my system this year. New proc, ram, board, vid card, audigy card, 74 gig raptor, 200 gig storage drive, cooling, dvd burner, ect. lol, has to be one thing at a time though since i need to save most of my money to move in a couple months. :) Cool well heck yeah. I read the RAM FAQ sticky just yesterday, man that is some GREAT info! Feel free to give me any of your thoughts if you have any. :D
