I am planning to buy new system. Mainly use for normal day to day work & play few 3D games.

Is performance difference is very huge.

Which one will be better performance & money wise?

3.0 Dual Core vs. 2.6 Core Duo

2.6 Core Duo cost 1.5 times.

if the 3.0 dual core is p4 based then.
2.6 core duo is cooler and faster. by quite a noticeable amount.

If the dual core at 3.0 is a Pentium4 based chip, the Core Duo at 2.6 will annihilate it.

This is an odd question from a self-titled IT Guru. ;)

Clock speeds mean nothing unless comparing 2 chips with the same architecture.

There isn't exactly enough details. Exactly which CPUs are you talking about and is the 1.5x price difference $200, $400 or more?

"3.0 Dual core" is probably either a Pentium D 925 or Athlon X2 6000+.

"2.6 Core Duo" is probably a Core 2 Duo.

If it's between Pentium D 925 and Core 2 Duo E6700/E6750 systems, the Core 2 Duo is much faster.

If it's between Athlon X2 6000+ and Core 2 Duo E6700/E6750, the Core 2 Duo is still faster, but not as dramatically as the other option.

The price is the real problem with the decision. 1.5 times the price for either one might not be worth it if it's just for usual work and playing a few games. It's one thing if the cheaper system is $400 and the more expensive one is $600 (get the Core 2 Duo) and something else if it's $800 vs $1200.

The name isn't quite the question.

Anyway, this is a damn confusing question, you could easily be talking not only any desktop processor on the market today, but, also, you could be talking about a hell of a lot of laptops on the market today. Either way, an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo system will eat the AMD or older intel for lunch.
