Hi all,

I just setup my first crossfire rig and had a couple of questions.

I'm currently running:

2500k @ 4.5Ghz
2x7970 OC @ 1050Mhz
Maximus V Gene w/ PCI-e 3.0 8x/8x

120hz Samsung

What fps should I be getting in BF3 multiplayer? I seem to be averaging around 85 - 90fps regardless of quality (ultra,high,medium) Ultimately, I don't seem to be getting any advantage over a single 7970 at this resolution.

Does this seem normal? Is CFX primarily for scaling resolution out and not for an increase in fps?

The point of me getting the 2nd 7970 was to stay permanently above 120fps.

1. Are you running latest beta drivers with newest caps?
2. Have you verified that crossfire is enabled in CCC?
3. Do you see any FPS improvement in other games?

Run a benchmark like 3DMark11 to verify that CF is performing correctly.

Yep, they ended up registering in 3DMark11 as 7970(x2). I was forced to run the 720p benchmark b/c I only have the demo.

I did notice that my gpu usage in bf3 was anywhere between 49% and 90%.
 
Those scores look right. Off hand, it seems like your 2500K is bottlenecking your 7970's. Try running the BF3 performance graph to confirm. This is a great explanation of how to start it and how to interpret it: http://www.iron-pulse.com/showthread.php?34-Battlefield-3-Performance-Graph

BF3 multiplayer hammers the CPU. It's highly multithreaded though, so a CPU with hyperthreadding (2600K, 3770K) or even better more cores (3930K) could give you the FPS you want. Try googling for results from other systems to see what people are getting.
 
those score seem really low... one 7970 should be able to pull a P score of 10k or more... heck my 670 scores 9.5k by itself.

your score should be between 15-18k

ive seen dual 670s do 14-16k
 
I need my 2700k at 5.1 to achieve a solid 120+ in BF3, and even then theres occasional drops to 100-110.

Physics score does look low in 3dmark too for a 4.5 2600k, however RAM speed and timings are a big factor in that score too.
 
Well I got 14510 with 3770k@4.5ghz and 2x 7950 @ 1100/1500

I got a great deal on a 3770k from a friend.......under $100 great. Unfortunately, I won't be able to pick it up for another few weeks.

I was running my 2500k @ 5ghz, but since I've changed to a different case and motherboard, I've downgraded to my NH-D14 from a custom WC loop.

My current OC is a 3 minute sloppy 4.5ghz. (multiplier only + voltage) I know I could go a bit higher......but I can't imagine that I'm goin to see a huge difference by going from 4.5 to 4.8 with the 2500k.

From what everyone has posted, it does seem like the CFX 7970 scores on 3DMark11 are a bit low. As others have mentioned, it appears to be from the 2500k.


NOTE: I did a bit of benching and my CPU usage is near 100% during gameplay, while my GPU's average about 65%.

Hopefully this cpu upgrade will be just what I need.

Actually, my 3DMark scores with a single 7970 were around 10k.
 
Sounds like the new CPU will treat you right. A higher CPU usage than your GPU indicates a bottleneck.

If you were using a 60Hz monitor is might be a different story.
 
After the 12.11 came out, there is much less difference between single and Crossfire 7970 in BF3, the 12.11 really did boost up the performance on a single 7970 in BF3.

On mye setup, 3930k@4.8ghz and two 7970 @ 1150/1600, the best driver is actually the 12.8WHQL in BF3 for crossfire, it give me a significally more stable and higher fps than the 12.11. The 12.11 works great on single card, but just not on Crossfire for me in BF3.

I also have Xfire 7970's --- but ultimately took one out and stuck it in my media box as a bitcoin mining bitch.

I game at 1920x1080p -- sadly no 120Hz action going on over here. The 12.8's are by FAR the most stable driver for my 7970's (MSI) I've had endless issues with 2D corruption and other glitches on the 12.10s and 11s. Example is my cards are tested 100% stable 1200Mhz at 1.25V heat is no issue. When in overclocked mode I get massive 2D corruption on the desktop.

Switch back to 12.8 drivers and the same voltage/speed and everything is smooth as silk and pretty.

Weird.
 
oooh you using a maximus V Gene. I'm wondering how heating is on that board with two 7970 :O. I have a 7950 and might eventually consider CFX
 
I can tell you that on 2560x1440 @ 120Hz I'm getting around the same FPS and my 2500K is only at 4GHz. I'm also Xfire with 2 7970s on 12.10.

I do see higher CPU usage so I am thinking about pushing my 2500K up to find out where it can go. Nothing until now has really seemed like it would benefit from it.

I'm debating if I should pick up another one but w/ the shuddering issues is what holding me back.. Dunno I should jump the ship and go w/ 670 / 680.

Have you had any issues w/ xfire?
 
I think you are CPU bottlenecking yourself. I am using a 120hz monitor as well. My 7950 @ 1200/1575 max's out at 99% all the time in BF3 with my 2700k @ 5ghz.. Of course I cannot use MSAA since it would keep the framerate below 100fps, which it sometimes does. I can't stand going below 80ish FPS now.

Have you maxed out BF3 including MSAA? Do you have vsync on or off? Triple buffering?

I think a 2500k @ 4.5ghz is a bit low. Remember since you went 120hz. A higher FPS in games is more important then with a 60hz monitor (in my opinion).

Have you installed 12.11 beta 11 with the cap as well?
