I was wondering what would have better performance.

2 5770's would be about $320 and a 5870 for $400ish

I'm piecing together a new pc. Have been in a cave as far as gaming and gaming pc's goes.

if you can afford to pay for the 5870, it's a safer bet

crossfire 5770 produces similar FPS numbers compared to the 5870 in games that have good crossfire scaling, but there are games that scale poorly with crossfire and there is a possibility of dealing with microstutter

so it's a question of $80 whether you're willing to deal with the potential risk of crossfire.

i'd say one card to. don't want to say anything bad about the 5770, but maybe you should try out a 5850 first. then maybe xfire down the road. but the 5870 is a win for power.

2 5770s will perform better on average (odd because a 5770 is exactly 50% of a 5870, but true), but the 5870 will be more reliable and provide stronger minimums.

5870 over 2x 5770s, but i'd seriously consider a 5850 now, and then add another when they hit $150 down the road.

Single card solutions are generally better than two in most cases. If you look at some CrossfireX benchmarks you notice scaling performance varies from game to game.

what about cards that have two GPUs? Do those scale badly too?

Yes

Best single GPU you can afford is the rule if thumb. There are some special cases like people with very large high resolution screens or an array of screens or people who play a specific game that is known to scale well with dual gpu's and they can benefit from the extra frames but otherwise...

i thot i read somewhere the 5970 was basially 2 5770s put together.

Do you have a 30 inch monitor or eyefinity? If not, then get HD5850. If you do, then get 2x5850 or HD5870.

Btw, I have no problems with scaling nor micro stuttering.
