Building a new i7 build and deciding on video card(s).

Build is as follows:
i7 920 @4.0GHz
CoolIT Domino
2x1TB RAID 0
ASUS p6t
either 6GB or 12GB of XMS 3 1600 RAM
2407WFP LCD

What do you guys thing for a GPU?

For 1920 x 1200 GTX280 is better cause of the vram the 4770 cards 512 choke at 1920x1200.

What games do you play? Also you might chek on 4890 aswell.

I'd say the GTX280 or buy one HD4770 and wait for the next gen cards. Multiple 4770s seems to be silly to me.

Haven't got into gaming yet. Thought I might want to with this rig though. The trailer to Diablo 3 got me to want to try gaming. And also Modern Warefare 2.

Id go with the 280 as well. That is a monster card.

although I prefer Nvidia cards the 4890 is really the best card for the money and is just as fast as the gtx280. I would not even consider the 4770 crossfire setup because most games that would require that much gpu power would also require more than 512mb of vram for 1920 res.

4890 or gtx280 depending on whether your mobo supports crossfire or sli. I use a vapor-x 4890 myself.

sli or crossfire should not matter since it would make no sense to add another gtx280 or 4890 considering newer faster cards will be out in a few months.

I believe that you can crossfire unequal cards.
And who knows, the newer/faster cards might not be that MUCH faster.
And they will drive down the prices of current cards so that a second one for SLI or Crossfire use could be a better use of dollars for performance gain.

well new cards could be a lot different and not be compatible. also Im pretty certain they will be noticeably faster plus the inclusion of new tech like DX11. IMO I just dont see sli or crossfire as a good upgrade path in most cases and certainly not when new gen of cards with new tech are coming out soon. maybe six months ago that would have some bearing on card choice but certainly not at this point. again IMO.

this, the GTX275 and the 4890 are pretty well equal. both are the best bang for the buck in the ranger your talking about. I would not bother with a GTX280 unless you can get one as cheap as a GTX275 or better ( the GTX275 is likely to OC better, the 4890 almost certainly will)

the only advantage you could really get from crossfire 4770 are the power / heat benefits. for a machine that has limits or needs passive cooling then it might be an option.
