2x3870x2 crossfire-x problem

Hi. Got a major problem. i have 2x3870x2`s both identical powercolor gddr4 versions.
1 card is always disabled in the ati control panel.
Below is what it says in ccc.

As you can see it is disabled. Why is this.

PC specs.
asus p5e motherboard
quad core q6600 -stock speed (watercooled)
4gb ddr2 800
raid 0 2x500gb disks + 1 backup drive.
2x 3870x2
1000w coolermaster psu

Vista x64 home premium with sp1
cataltst 8.10 official drivers.

All i want to do is run this crossfire at least 1 time :(. Please share your wisdom.
 
what does gpuz say? how about a screen shot of catalyst? do you get a crossfire pane when you launch catalyst?
 
gpu-z says 2 gpu cores enabled, but the drop down box shows all 4.
If i click each one, 3 are enabled but the 3rd one down says disabled.
crossfire is detected in ccc but theres no drop down box to select 2.3.4 gpu`s. Just a ticked box is all thats there.
 
try opening overdrive to see if it will let you look at the individual temperatures of each gpu core

Anyway it lists
Radeon 3870x2 [p223w] for the first one .
Radeon 3870x2 for the second.

Presume the first one is the display as thats my monitors model number.
 
well cod4 shows that it is only running 1 3870x2. removing 1 card, i still get the same frame rate.
i tried crossfire with a spare 3870x2 ddr3 version and that shows up in ati crossfire menu as 3 gpu`s.
Under ccc overdrive 4 3870x2`s are shown.
why when i add the new card does crossfire only show a ticked box and no option to chose how many gpu`s i can use.
 
you're not supposed to be able to choose how many gpus you use, in cf on an intel board catalyst is supposed to see two cards and thats it. no difference in frame rate definitely would dive me pause. you may have to try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. determine that both cards work individually, then make sure both slots work individually.
 
Sorry but i can chose....

[Solved] Powercolor had kindly stuck a yellow circle sticker on the back side of the crossfire pins. after removing the cards and comparing them i noticed it.
once removed and booted back up, i now have the pull down box and enabled 4gpu`s. now cod 4 runs insane :).

You are right though on standard 3870x2x2`s you can only select 2 gpu`s or at least thats all i could evver do..

i wasn't aware that catalyst allowed you to choose how man gpu's you could use with two x2 cards. as far as i could discern, it was cf on or off; two or four and nothing in between. going to have to check my rig when i get home.
