I have decided to build me a 2x 2TB raid 5 server, money is not the issue; but finding the hardware that fits my proposed specifications has been a problem.

I have decided on SATA drives, either the 300 gig maxtors (supports NCQ), or the WD 250 'Raid Edition' drives. Along with a pair of 74 gig 10k Raptors (raid 1), will do 4x raptor and raid 10 if I have the bay space in the case.

A Pair of 3ware 9500-8MI or the 9500-8 (depends on case).

Now here are my 2 problems.
1. I want to stick with dual AMD's Opterons, but I am having problems finding a motherboard to fit with the 3ware raid cards.
2. Last is a Case that has enough hot swap bays for this beast, while maintaining a relatively low profile (aka no 8u rack mount). Needs about 16 sata hotswap bays, and 2 or 4 internal hdd bays (sata).

The rest is cake walk, but I lack experience with this large of an array.

Anyone got some suggestions?
 
just wanted to ask a quick question...

if money is not the issue, why would you not use SCSI? :confused:
 
Is there any reason you need 2TB or are you just doing it for a pissing contest? Honestly, now that the 1TB barrier has been broken many times and you can get 400gb harddrives I don't see it being much of a feat to break any number of TB as all you need is money.

Just my opinion though. I'd love to have that kind of money but then again I'd spend it on better things. :D
 
1. take a look at some of Tyan's Opteron Mobos
2. take a look at some AIC or Chenbro units

The above equipment is availiable from any number of dealers on the net.

And a recommendation (from someone with a 2TB PATA RAID 5 machine); ALWAYS setup your RAID array with a hot-spare drive.
 
This is a central data storage for various individuals in a small buisness, some digital video editing and just storage of other junk.

I have to say no to the 400 gb Hitachi drives (IBM), yes they are large; do they still have the same failing problem?

SCSI is getting into too many drives (Case wise) & cost is a little too much for the amount of space I am aiming for.

Definatly going to have hot spares in this baby, thats why I was looking for a case with nothing but hot spare bays.

i have a 120GXP that i bought when they first arrived... still running strong.
 
Ive got a 75GXP that is still going as well; but it's the reputation they have for failing. Just ask Kyle for his comments on them.
 
If money is truely not an issue. You should get a external integrated solution. They have there own controllers, reduant power systems, and true hot swaps. They are designed as one systems not a piece mail home built. You will have far less issues and greater data security. There are huge chances for data corruption in home built systems that would never happen in an enterprise system.


Personally I would recomend a nstor 4700F 12 drives in a 2u package. The price is pretty reasonable for what you are getting.

I am baised because I there but it truely is a great production that is starting to bridge the gap between enterprise level hardware and small bussiness or even enthusiast stuff.
 
I say cost is not an issue, in my mind I have a 5,000 - 10,000 price tag. More worried about getting the right products so that it will last and not die in the next 2 years.

You could easily get a 4700F for that price retail is something like $3500 for the enclosure and the controller it would be more if you wanted dual controllers but I feel it is not required.


You will be much happier with a true integrated solution and a company to get tech support from in the event of a problem. Not mention the software for the nStor stuff is a shit load nicer then a 3ware bios screen. It supports email alert, visual web based remote monitoring, and super easy remote or local config.
 
I probably would be much happier and will strongly consider it; the 3500$ is just case and controller? So ontop of that I would have the drives & the PC cost?

the nStor facility you work at draksia is located in Lake Mary, FL ?? I think I had a friend who used to work there if I am thinking of the same company.
