currently running one physical server with 4 VMs on a host running hyper-v. we have 4TB total raid array of space but our main VM with 2TB is almost full and i would like to increase the space. i thought i could allocate more space to that VM or slap in more drives, create a volume, and merge. but apparently that is not doable because it is a VM using VHD? (i am still kinda new to this)

if this really is the case, can someone briefly explain why. and if so, how do i fix this and add more space with least amount of downtime while retaining the current data.

ah ok yeah i have read a bit more since i posted.

i am assuming this conversion will retain all the data but will require some significant downtime?

uh, But VHDX disk format technology is not supported in Windows Server 2008 R2

2TB is the limit on 08 R2 without passing through a physical disk, there's a reason hyper-v pre WS2012 was generally reviled in the VM community. Unless you need specific features of full server 2008 R2 on bare metal, why not just upgrade to Hyper-V Server 2012, as it fixes the 2TB and many other issues and limitations.

So I could upgrade just the host to hyper-v 2012? We have another issue i haven't mentioned. our main server is running small business server 2011 and we are rapidly approaching the 75 user limit (filled about 20 positions in 3 months) and it doesn't look like its slowing down. maybe its time to upgrade everything.

i see 2012 hyper-v is free standalone but our host runs backup exec and couple other random tasks.
