Well I took the CPUs out checked there pads, checked the sockets and swapped them over (so cpu1 is now in socket 2 and cpu2 is now in socket 1)

And I still get crashes...
 
I don't know what to tell you.

If it was me I'd probably consider:
1. Trying sockets 1+4 or 1+3
2. Trying completely different CPU pair
3. Reducing setup complexity: removing board from the case, dropping PCI-E GPU, leaving
  just board/CPUs/HSFs/mem/HDD, all sitting in the open

None of those sounds fun, I know...
 
Did you also clean the CPU pads with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol? The CPU board pads too.
 
Personally, I wouldn't touch socket pins at all as it usually ends badly... (based on experiences
of folks around here).
 
I cleaned the CPU pads with ethanol but I didn't dare touch the boards socket.

Reducing setup complexity will be something i will have to save til I have some free time, at that point I will try cpu 1 + 3,4 as well.

Its stable at 2.8Ghz @ 1.1v so I will keep it at that for now until I have time to deconstruct it.
 
Unrelated, but I'm putting a 8300 4P machine together right now, and just gave up on a set of used CPUs.

Each chip works in Socket 1. Some work as pairs, no config will work 4P.

Nothing wrong with the machine, it works with other sets of chips. Minute damage to the some of the pads on the CPU's are probably to blame. The chips were mishandled at some point, and the pads are scratched deep.

Frustration.
 
Well with the BMC turned on I get System Events in the IPMI log that say the system event was caused by a Voltage sensor.
Also after turning the BMC back on it took me around 30 mins to POST as the IPMI module took a age to initialise.
Also I need to unplug the rig after every reboot or I get stuck at BIOS bleeps (6) with BMC turned on, with it turned off I can boot fine.

At 3.3GHz @ 1.3V (same as PS-0) It crashes very quickly, before much load is put on the CPUs at all.
I'm leaning towards a board failure, do SuperMicro do RMAs for boards bought on eBay?
And somebody in my team who has the same CPUs as I will be testing to see if his crash at the same voltage and freq.
