I've had this setup for a year now and the 2nd card was always hotter, 1-2c above the top card at around 75-80c. I played Bioshock today and the 2nd card heated up so fast, within 30 seconds, it went from 40c to 80c and continues to 85c (automatic fan control so the fan gets pretty fast and still can't keep the temp down) while the top card is still at 50c. Voltages and speeds look normal, I didn't touch the 2nd card at all, what could be wrong all of a sudden? I didn't download new drivers or anything.

Check to see if there is something blocking the air flow on the second card (i.e. dust, etc.) Also check to see that the fan is spinning properly as it may be damaged or clogged by dirt as well.

Good luck!

There is nothing blocking and the fan is indeed spinning! I can hear the fan ramp up quickly.

Are you using 13.3 beta drivers? I had a strange issue like that with the new bioshock in crossfire, enough to make me want to play with one card.

I am on 13.2 drivers and I've put 10 hours into Bioshock just fine until today. I haven't downloaded any new drivers or updated anything. I supposed I could try to reinstall my drivers just to make sure, but how would drivers affect the temps rising uncontrollably? In Bioshock, both top and bottom cards are around 50% GPU usage but the 2nd card ramps up in temp so fast, almost like there's no thermal paste or something.

I only have one gpu but I've experienced issues with a few of those driver releases where they would stick the gpu clock at full load even when you weren't doing anything. Wonder if that's possible with one of your cards.

Ah, just got done switching the cards. Something is wrong . Stressing it at all, it jumps from idle 50c to 80c in a matter of seconds.

Maybe it's time to replace the thermal compound between the GPU and heatsink?

Yeah, I thought about that, but it's on a 2-year warranty so I want to see if I can get it replaced before I void it by opening it and replacing the TIM didn't help.

where do you have your monitor cables connected to ? top or bottom card ?

Yeah, I thought about that, but it's on a 2-year warranty so I want to see if I can get it replaced before I void it by opening it and replacing the TIM didn't help.

I had a very similar issue with an MSI lightning 7970 so I contacted support and they suggested the TIM replacement. Once I had the go-ahead from them, I did so and I saw an immediate 20 degree drop in temp. You might try opening a ticket with your manufacturer to see if they will let you do the same before issuing a warranty return.
