Woooo hoo, im so glad you guys convinced me to return my first 2405. As much as I loved it, the backlighting was just eating me alive so I finally succumbed and gave my sob story to Dell on Wed and I had a nice brand new one delievered to me today!

Needless to say, I could barely breath setting up the second monitor, so afraid I was gonna find worse backlighting or even dead pixels. So I powered it up, all looked well and then I did the "night" test.........

Perfect!!!! I couldn't asked for better and NOT ONE SINGLE DEAD PIXEL!!! Oh I am so so so happy right now I could just dance :D :D :D

maybe the brightness of your monitor is too low because the one on the right has obvious brighter backlight leakage spots.

How did you do that perfect night test? My screen doesn't have any light bleeding and when I just preview my screen saver and turn off the lights, my screen does appear "brighter" than yours, but still relatively dark and the black appears uniform.

Waited till night for one thing, then put my Canon camera on low light focus and turned flash off and held REALLY steady.
 
my screen has little backlight but is definately brighter than that! almost a uniform grey colour, ill post a pic up later and you can all judge for yourself....its a bit subjective though, ill try and get the 'on' light to the same intensity that you have lol
 
wow, mine is a lot bright than that
it's uniform across the screen, but I would love to have true blacks
I'll post a pic tonight

That could just be due to his camera settings. It's not that easy to tell black levels from a picture.

Considering digital camera's don't naturally don't do well in low ligh, getting decent pics of what were doing is next to impossible.
 
Well here is an image of my 2405 in the dark as best as I can get it.



Not much bleed but an overall 'glow' which I presume is normal, tried to get the grey of the screen in the photo to match the actual grey when viewed which is difficult, but it would appear very slightly darker than is...

I never understood the whole "backlight" issue... I mean 99% of the time your using your LCD with a fairly uniformly bright screen on display... certainly Windows XP and Gaming your not ever going to have a completely black screen.

It must be some uber nerd thing where you blank your monitor screen and sit and look at the backlight bleeding in the dark.

It may be anal, but spending $800+ on a monitor should allow you the right to expect a perfect one. Or atleast one without dead pixels and good backlight distribution.

I definitely see the difference in the picture. The right one has unacceptable backlight leakage that would be incredibly annoying for movies. I would have done the same thing icewind - good work! Just curious, what are the production dates/revision#s on the two panels?

They were both July A01's.

dead pixels...for sure.. nothing more annoying then them.

backlight bleeding I just never really notice.. since I never watch movies on my PC..

Thats what my Plasmas, DLP rear projection and LG 32" LCD TV are for..
 
Not everyone's quite that wealthy. The 2405fpw without bleeding would make an excellent tv.
 
A lil' offtopic but I was viewing this thread with dvd playin the background and here's what I got :D


I know quality is awful but I couldn't get a screenshot, it was only showing on screen, but not in the buffer :D And my camera is sucky, it's a cell phone :p To those who can't make it out - it's the bottom part of the first post in this thread, with the picture of the 2 2405's... The dark parts of the monitors evidently somehow became "transparent" and were showing the dvd picture that was running in the background. It shows pretty well how dark the left monitor is compared to the right one :cool:

Mine looks very similar to yours. It's definitely brighter than IceWind's, but not by much. I would say maybe 10% brighter, but the colour is uniform.
 
can somebody explain the importance of backlight bleeding? what does it look like and why should i care?

i'm buying a new monitor... just wanted to know
