I would have thought these chips would be running faster than the 1mb ones, why are they not?

Dothan is faster than Banias. What makes you think it is not?

Not seeing too many w/2mb cache

SuperPi isn't a proper benchmark. Showing the top ten results for overclocked Pentium 4s isn't proper statistics for Banias/Dothan.

Indeed, cache is often a problem with overclocking, so it could be that there are no 2 mb models because they cannot overclock this well. What are things like at stock speeds?

And well, I can say that there's diminishing returns on cache size. The more cache you add, the less effect it is going to have. So going from 1 mb to 2 mb is not as spectacular as you may think. In most cases 1 mb cache is 'enough'.
And as mentioned, in the case of the Prescott, the extra mb of cache means that the latency had to go up. I don't think there's such a latency difference between Dothan and Banias though.

Oops, I was thinking Banias vs Dothan. I must be spending too much time in the mobile forum. ;)

Yeah, the 6xx processors are slower clock for clock than the 5xx and NW processors. Max Power was right in the first reply: cache latency was increased again in the 6xx series processors vs the 5xx processors. Black Morty Rackham is also correct in pointing out that SuperPI isn't a great benchmark. It's completely unoptimized for modern CPUs because it's so old.

Well what about 3dmark I keep seeing Intel pretty much getting the crap kicked out of it. Also is the intel Pentium 4 630 a 64bit chip or just support 64bit OS?

I keep looking at Intel because I would like to have a 4-5ghz chip. I like AMD and they seem to be kicking ass in performance but it's hard to compare with people posting their marks with FX55s. I'm not going to spend that much.

Basically AMD = Best for games
P4 best for anything else, pretty much.
Pentium M owns all, how much are you looking to spend? And dont get too hung up on Ghz, as you can see, its isnt everything. Go look over at anandtech, or hexus, or even on [h]ardocp and they have plenty of benchmarks of various speed cpus.

The AMD cpus are superior for gaming. This merely reflects that.

.

How could it run 64bit applications and not be 64 bit?
In otherwords, yes, it has EM64T which is Intel's version of x86-64.

The Pentium M benchmarks against AMD chips are almost always with the AMD chips at stock speed. The price/performance of the Dothan Sonoma platform makes it very impractical. You could get a 4000+ or even a 4400+ for the same price and have more features.

Fair point, but theres things like coolness factor to consider. And youd probably still kick a 4000 at stock as far as encoding etc goes, definately not a 4400, but from pre order prices im seeing over here you can get dothan+board for the same price as a 4400

Yes, Dothans are pretty damn nifty. I'm getting a notebook soon that will have a Dothan in it.

I don't think the Pentium M does that great in encoding, actually. That's more of a Netburst thing, whereas the Dothan is a P6 processor at heart.

Encoding benchmarks:
http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=635&pid=2404

Here you can see the Dothan encodes almost at the same speed as an A64 clock for clock. The 2.13GHz Dothan is almost as fast as the 2.2ghz A64 3500+. It does beat the A64 in MP3 encoding, but not quite DVD.

Since Yonah will definately be an improvement across the board, I could see it keeping up with X2's, given how similarly the P6 execution core performs compared to the K8's at any given clockspeed.

Yeah, my main system is on a Dothan/i855GME platform and even I know that Dothan certainly doesn't "own all." Actually, I find the performance to be quite inconsistent, though much more along the lines of the K8 than of the P4.

You probably notice a drop in performance in very bandwidth (mem) hungry apps, as youre gonna be stuck at somewhere in the region of 400 (i imagine a bit more, it is overclocked right?)

Well I thought the Pentium Ds were 64bit released. Well I dunno hardwares hardware, and softwares software. You can run hyperthreading on normal windows so why not a modded chip on windows 64?

I have no idea what you mean. Hyperthreading has nothing to do with x86-64. What exactly are you trying to say?

Yes, the Pentium D's have EM64T, as do the 5xxF and 6xx series. And all modern Xeons (i.e some Nocona's IIRC and the Irwindale)
