My dad is flying to the US this week and he wants to buy a new work related laptop, I had a hard time trying to talk him into going for the Lenovo p50 instead of the other weaker slim models, he wants to go for this Asus which has an i7, lots of HDD , SSD and a 4k monitor, it doesnt look bad but the p50's Xeon is better so i managed to convince him otherwise, I went it to the page to choose the model parts but i have a doubt about the various SSD options, specially if I should pick NVME, plus there are plenty of different parts to choose from for the laptop, including how much RAM, touch or non touch screen, 1080p or 4k, etc, . please help me pick the best parts for him

So far thats about 2100 USD, its just above his budget so he is willing to spend it, i told him that its better to get an external drive instead of the 500gb HDD included in the page. like this one: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STEB5000100 Black

Another important thing to consider is that in my country we use 220v power outlets, so is that going to be an issue if he tries to charge the laptpop using a 110AC watt adapter? I hope the adapter works on 220v

I also had the option to add this:
Integrated Mobile Broadband: Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A (Sierra Wireless EM7455)
but i dont know whats it for, maybe he doesnt even need it, i think the Wireless is enough to go online, is it really necessary?

Thanks in advance

Have you looked out the outlet? I just picked up a new P50 yesterday with those same specs (but a 4K screen and an M.2 256GB SSD) for $1430...then gave that up and grabbed a refurbed one with a 6700, 4K, M1000M, 512GB M.2, and just 8GB RAM for $1130. I'll get the RAM bumped to 32 or 64GB for cheap, and toss in a 256GB 850Pro for VMware machines.

Anyway, the AC adapter should handle both.

That integrated is for cellular service. integrated hot spot when away from WiFi.

If you're looking at an external, you may want to consider a 2.5" instead of a 3.5" drive. Bus powered, so it can be used on the go by just your USB ports instead of needing another power port.

The outlet is a good place to start, some good deals there right now.

What outlet do you recommend? in lenovos page those same specs cost 2100 busck, he will be buying in washington and then he goes to Denver. He is not using CAD or too many graphic demanding apps, he just wants the top of the line to work as fast as possible, specially when having lots of windows open, big excel files and moving stuff around , and he also need a lot of storage. Are SSD Nvme really necessary?
In my country's forum they told me Lenovo has worse support here than Dell, so that could be a bonus in favor to Dell, i dont really think my dad needs a Xeon too, much less a very high power GPU like the Quadro. how much downgrade would there be if goes for a Dell Latitude 7000, or something similar? Ive read XPS are shite now. the good thing about the Lenovo p50 its the battery life and the solid build, if it were to fall it would resist more than the dells. Considering this what do you think is best suited for him?

You can do it a few ways.

1. Replace the 7200RPM with an SSD. Samsung 850 Evo or Pro is my choice. Leaves the other bay free.

2. Keep the 500GB in the current bay, and add a 2.5" SSD. You'll need the mounting kit for it. Still suggest the 850 series.

3. Keep the 500GB in the current bay, and add an M.2 SSD. You'll need the mounting kit for it. 850 Evo if you don't want to shell out for the 950 Pro. You can add an 2nd one as well for 3 total drives.

my 64 GB of RAM came in today, and on Tuesday or so I should have the mounting kit for an 850 Pro to hold virtual machines, and a mounting kit for a 512GB 950 Pro after I get my Yoga sold off.

in option 1 do you mena i can move the HDD to the other drive?
Is the 2.5 SSD faster than the m2?
What option do yoy think is more convenient for him if he wants to have more space and a small SSD for the OS, i think the NVMN drives are a bit overkill for him.
Can you post a link of a mounting kit devide pls. ive never heard of them

Option 1 is just take the spinner out and put an SSD in its place. Then do something with the spinner. Other PC, external enclosure, whatever.

ThinkPad Mobile Workstation Storage Kit I don't honestly know if this includes the 2.5" mounting stuff needed for the 2.5/msata bay or not. I'll find out on Tuesday, as I needed it for the bay where just 2.5" drives go. I'd skip it. What you should want is this:
ThinkPad P50 M.2 SATA SSD Tray

I'd buy a Samsung 850 Evo M.2 if you think NVME is overkill. M.2 or 2.5" should be the same speed, so long as we're talking about SATA bus and not PCIe bus drives.

Just to update, the tray kits came to day. The workstation storage kit includes the cables needed for both bays. That's really nice, for me, as I'm likely to want to pull/disconnect the drives and plug in a 2.5" drive temporarily for things like LAN parties, and my main drives will be filled with VMs and stuff like that.

I recommend keeping an eye on the outlet as well. I picked up a P50 with a 6820k, 4k, 16gb, 256ssd, m2000m for ~$1300. Should be arriving in a couple of days.

Thanks for this. I plan on filling up the 2nd msata slot and the 2.5" in mine for more storage.
