I'm looking at some 7870s and 7950s... To me, a big difference, it would seem, would be that the latter has a whole extra Gb of memory. So... does it really matter.

I have the choice of spending about 230 on an OCed (1100mhz) Gigabyte HD 7870 with 2Gb, or a XFX Radeon HD 7950 Double D 800MHZ 3GB, but for 300.

Should I do a double-take?

I'm stepping up from a crappy HD5700, and the 7870 looks good... but I don't also want to upgrade often. Should I pony up the extra scratch for the 3Gb card?

I think the extra memory most come into play if you are using the card to drive very large resolutions, eyefinity and the like. If you're just going to be gaming on one monitor then I would choose the 7870 and keep the rest of the money. However, if you can afford the 7950 and plan on using eyefinity, than it really is the better choice.

personally, I couldn't justify spending another almost $100 bucks to jump from 200 to 300 when the net gains are somewhat limited when you start overclocking either card. I went for the 7870 just recently, but I still haven't received the adapters I need to use all 3 monitors and test out it's capabilities at 5760-1080. I'm hopeful I'll be able to play at eyefinity at somewhat reduced settings with the card.

Yep, based on my sleuthing (which really, I should have done beforehand) it seems that's what the bigger memory cards are built for... Many single monitor 1920x1080ish games don't even come too close to 2Gb.

I ended up going for the 7870. :)
 
i might be going with a 7870 using 4320x900 resolution.
 
I got a Powercolor Vortex II 7870 and love it. I run at 25x14 and it does the job.
