Working on a new build and trying to better understand what differences I should expect between the following cards

All 2gb memory
- 6950 vs 6970
- 560ti vs 570

It looks like on average there is a $100 difference 6950/6970 and 560ti/570. Is it worth the $100?

Will be running the i5 2500k. No SLI at the moment, but maybe down the road. Hoping to run BF3 at above average settings.
 
With the 6950 vs 6970 you will get minimal performance difference with the 6970 but not worth the extra 80 or some odd dollars more that it cost, with the 560ti and 570, the 570 outperforms the 560s at least 20 fps.
 
As sotexpb stated, worth it with the nvid side of things, but with the amd side its much closer, and when you add in oc/unlock potential of 6950 it brings them even nearer in performance potential

I wish people wouldn't quote fps as discrete numbers like this, it's totally meaningless. 20fps more than what? 20 more than 20 would be double the performance, whereas 20fps more than 250fps would be almost worthless.

Generally speaking:

Up to 1920x1200 inclusive:
HD6950: 100% of an HD6950
HD6970: 109% of an HD6950
GTX560Ti: 103% of an HD6950
GTX570: 108% of a GTX560Ti, 111% of an HD6950

Beyond 1920x1200 (e.g. 2560x1440+, or eyefinity/surround):
GTX560Ti: 94% of an HD6950
HD6950: 100% of an HD6950
GTX570: 108% of a GTX560Ti, 102% of an HD6950
HD6970: 110% of an HD6950

Don't count on the unlock...newer ones are proving to be totally unlockable, even un-flashable...

Obviously don't count on it, but that's not to say it's a lost cause. Between the sapphire cards and some of the MSI twin frozrs, there's some good reports. I've personally seen 3 newly purchased msi tf2's unlock in the last 2 weeks. Now, I'm sure a big part of that is that the newly produced msi cards are tf3's which are more likely to be hardlocked, but there's still possibilities out there on the shelves.

At your 1600x1050 resolution a 6870 2gb overclocked is by far the best value.

The XFX 6870 2gb is on sale for 185$AR, yes 2gb 6870.

This card will run BF3 at high settings, not ultra, at good fps.
Also comes with free Dirt 3 race game.

Hm, I'm surprised as well, thought 2gb option was pretty much limited to 6950+. Quick check of newegg shows a 6450 and a 6570 with 2gb as well, although how those make sense may be a little beyond me. And then there's 6870x2 cards from visiontek and powercolor...I had no idea those were even being considered being made. Granted, they're ~$500, so I'm really struggling to know what market they're after, in addition to the fact that the 2gb on those cards is presumably split so it'd be 1gb to each gpu.

Such cards are common and have been for years, presumably they're for workstation usage - I never figured that one out.
 
Fine maybe, but Battlefield 3 at maxed settings? Not so sure. I think you'll need a bit more grunt than that to run AA or AO.
 
The cheap one's a GTX560, not a GTX560Ti, therefore is only about 88% of the performance.

I am firmly convinced that such cards are purely for those silly people who come to ask one for advice, then don't want to believe you when you tell them they won't need all that RAM for their 17" LCD. :rolleyes:

Bigger is obviously better, amirite?
