2GB 4870 review

no not really worth it at this time and for this level of gpu. if you look at Empire Total War though you will see that 8x AA isnt even on option at 2560 with just 1gb. also in GTA 4 being able to crank up the view distance like you can with the 2gb card would be nice. the next round of cards will definitely be able to make much more use out of having more than 1gb of vram at 2560. even right now at 2560 you would need more than 1gb to use 8x AA in Far Cry 2 so these 4870 2gb cards would be useful for crossfire.

Yeah, could see 2560 users going with crossfire of these instead of 4870X2 or 1gb versions.

Would appear that currently, 2gb is a bit too much, however if they were able to load 1.5gb it might make more sense.

Was interesting that 8xaa and higher view distance were able to be enabled in some games with no real frames hit.

Remember the 2GB 9600GT from Palit? These sorta cards are pure marketing schemes. A 4870 has no reason to ever need more than 1GB. This card isn't capable of handling the resolution and AA needed to fill up 1GB.

Like someone above said, would be great in crossfire or as an X2 card with 4gb total, overkill as a single card though.

I wonder if maybe that is not more driver related then hardware. we know that the 1gb has been a limit in crossfire (how much?) and that benefits going from 512mb to 1gb is often more a matter of playability then frame rate. 2gb might be usable if they coded for it.

The memory is never shared so if one card can't max out 2GB, how would 2 max 4GB if it's not even 100% effecient scale wise?

wrong when it comes to the 4870.. you can already see in that review that at 2560 1gb was not enough to do 8x in one game and not enough to have distance turned up in another where clearly the 2gb card could. if you were using two 4870 2gb at 2560 then your framerate would be even better while allowing you to crank settings beyond what two 4870 1gb cards could handle.

It can fill the memory, it just that the gpu cant handle the visual settings that are causing it to be filled. Imagine it in 4 way crossfire though, same amount of memory but with the power of 4 cores.

would a 2gb Xfired with a 512mb make for a total of 2.5gb?

if so I can see someone with a early version 512mb adding a 2gb for xfire.

I have 2 9600gt's in sli and I was debating on getting a 1gb version but wasn't sure if it would make a difference in SLI.

no, since each card has the same stuff in memory I assume the 2gb card would limit its self to 512? if they work together that is.

Thats what I assumed which is why I didn't go for the 1gb 9600gt. Since it doesn't work that way I don't really see a reason for that much memory aside for selling the card at a higher price.
