My friends dad is looking into building a new system for some very intensive picture editing. He uses mainly photoshop, and I was wondering how we should go about this. $3000 or so for a budget.

AMD vs Intel?...Dual procs?...Dual core proc?

Gimme some ideas

If budget is a concern, i'd go intel. They tend to perform better in the phosthop media department. It will come out a touch cheaper than an opteron setup also. Dual processors aren't a required for media editing but alot of media programs will take full advantage of smp systems which could really help performance. It really boils down to what type of budget you want to do this on.

but with 3 grand would a dualie system be better?

and what about a graphics card?

If it's not for gameing or 3d work you can get by with a fairly inexpensive card. $3000 will put together a very decent dual xeon rig.

Yeah dual xeons, with a boatload of ram and fast disk.
for 3 grand you should be able to get u320 scsi or something quick like that.

you can build a sweet dual opteron system with a nForce4 pro board for probalby 2 grand... and it will still kick intel's ass

I'd go with a dual xeons would be good for photo editing. A dual G5 apple would make a nice system too. Either way for 3 grand or more depending on what he wants to spend would make a nice system be it amd, intel or apple.

he is looking for pc only, tho i myself would love a dual g5 machine

Put most of your money in RAM then hard disk space. Maybe go with intel, I'm not sure about that one.
