is one just a over clocked version? like the 7970 vs ghz edition? Im offloading some stuff to make room for my pre orders!

AMD hasn't released performance or pricing info yet, but the consensus around the web is:
R9 290X = this generation's 7970
R9 290 = this generation's 7950

ill probably be in for a 290, nice bump from my stock 7970 referenced @ 5760x1080 :)

Fixed. The 290X and the 290 is Hawaii based. Everything below that is rebrands as far as I know. 7970 = 280X and 7950 = 280.

what hes saying is that the 290x is going to replace our 7970, i understood him AKA the new flagship

no worries :). i'm jacked up on 3 cups and heading for my 4th.

pliskin679 i'm also upgrading from a 7970. I'm anxious to see how the 290 and 290X compare. if they end up being like the 7970/7950, where the 7950 was extremely close to the 7970 once overclocked, i'll probably go with the 290. it's a good time to be a gaming nerd.

i need more smooth FPS in FFXIV!!! and BF3 of course. But if Nvidia Loweres there prices. I think it will be tough with the 780
