i'm at 95*C load and downclocking hard, what can i replace it with?

i just want to keep it under 80*C without much noise, the accelero coolers are too expensive, thanks
 
Get the Accelero Xtreme III or IV and be done with it.
(not sure if IV is compatible, worth checking and if it will fit in your case. Its pretty good that you dont need to glue memory/vrm sinks on)
The temps after are fantastic and its silent no matter what you do.
You can overclock like crazy and still no noise, heat or performance problems.

I put the III on my old 290x. Temps stayed below 60C even when clocked.
 
the reference cooler, the fan is hitting 70%, it's very loud, i'm surprised someone got paid for desigining this cooler, and someone at amd that though it was good, i would fire both of them
 
Yeah that squirrel cage blower get pretty loud once you start loading up the card. For my 290 I used a Raijintek Morpheus with a pair of AC F12 Pro fans. The difference was night and day! Card's temps never went pass 50c with heavy gaming for hours and my ears loved it :love:
 
Its happened the same for me, and I bought an Gelid Icy Vision, and I don't regret :)
 
yeah clean it and apply new good paste. if that's not good enough you could replace the heat sink with anything mentioned above or put a AIO on it. or mod it...
 
i fried it :(, i took off the cooler and remounted it few times , the cooler was just defective,
i'm shocked how easy it is to fry a vcard
 
Darn wish I had seen this thread. You could have done a setup like in my signature for $30 + the price of an AIO cooler.
 
There's no problem with the card running at 95C. I've had a pair of 290s for 2.5 years now... Mined heavily with them with the fans at 100%. They are loud but there aren't any issues. You do need to set the power target to 50% and max fan to 100 to prevent throttling though.
 
What temp do the VRMs get to with the core that hot? I was paranoid enough yesterday when my VRM controller got to 85°C on my Fury X. It started stinking that "warm electronics" smell. Not burnt mind you, just the smell of really hot components.

I haven't had a reason to check. The Hawaii cores were engineered with that temperature in mind. Can't speak to the Fury X. This has seemingly been a common misconception for a number of years now.

Super easy to fry a GPU if you knock or put pressure on one of the many exposed chips on most GPUs. The cooler wasn't likely defective, all of those stock 290/290X blower coolers just suck at handling the heat output from the GPU.

My R9 290 when it reaches it's out of range point, as far as temperature goes, would shutdown the PC to prevent damage. It would do this at 95c on the core. Not sure what the Fury series of cards are set to.

I'm not having any issues with the core temperature on my Fury X. The stock cooler does a good job of keeping everything it touches cool. The voltage controller chip IR 3567B (same as used on the 290 & 390 I believe) is the hottest component and it's not being actively cooled. I've modded the BIOS on my card so it throttles at a very conservative 56°C GPU core to keep the VR within it's own specs. I was playing through the campaign in Ashes of the Singularity yesterday and at 55°C on the core and 59°C on the VRMs the IR 3567B hit it's max temperature of 85°C. Well.. the datasheet specs list 85°C as the maximum ambient temperature it can operate at so it obviously has headroom above that but how much I cannot find listed anywhere. Does your 290 report "VR VDDC temperature" in HWiNFO or another monitoring program?

My R9 290 is under water now. I see GPU VRM Temperature 1 & 2 in HWINFO. Those are 36c and 54c respectfully. That is with Black Desert Online running minimized in the system tray. With the game fullscreen I'm seeing 60c and 66c. I bought a used GPU block that was missing some of the screws; that might be the difference in temps between the two readings. I have replacement screws from Koolance on my desk and I am debating on taking down the loop right now or waiting a day or two. Experience boost event is happening in Black Desert Online this weekend and it's been running without the VRM screws for 3 weeks without a complaint. ;)

This is the waterblock that I'm using.

Ah with your block the chip I'm referring to is uncovered at least allowing the ambient air to cool it. It's closer to the end of the board than the VRMs and has a tiny colored dot in the corner of it (white or pink in the pictures I've seen).

In the Fury X it is completely hidden under the aluminum(?) frame of the cooler but not directly contacting it with a thermal pad. So really no ambient air can reach it with such a tiny gap. I'm thinking of getting something like this:

Ha ha yea. Just soaking in this exp boost 24/7. If something goes wrong I always wanted a Nano or Fury anyways.

What are your core temps like? On my 290x I have similar VRM temps and the core loads around 60-64C - on air.

Same as your's. I have my voltage pegged on this card as it is a really terrible overclocker. I have +50 Power Limit %, +100 on the core, and +100 on the AUX voltage on the core. This card was only good for 1025 on 45% fan speed and 1050 on 100% fan. With water I'm at 1125 on the core. Also with the stock cooler I was throttling @1025 with less than 45% fan. I was hitting 95c overclocked. I just set the memory to 1550 and it doesn't seem to care.

How does your card OC? And what voltage?

It's an average clocker but a bit better than yours it seems. I run it at 1100/1500 with +46mV vcore, though it will ramp up all the way to 1200mhz with +125mV (though it's not worth the heat penalty). If I leave it at stock clocks(1030/1250)/volts/+50 power limit the core won't even crack 60C. Really impressed with the Prolimatech MK-26, as good as it gets on air I reckon.

Mine would only hit 1025 without putting the fan into Slasher Flick Screamer Mode on air. I have the WORST overclocker on the planet I bet. That's why I have to run so much juice to it. I'm almost running 5x more extra voltage than you. :) More voltage = more heat = diminishing returns.

If I go for 1130 I see artifacts everywhere. I bet I couldn't get to the Windows sign in screen @1200.

Now my CPU? I can undervolt it and then overclock it. The CPU and GPU are worlds apart.
 
Your best bet would be find a cheap/used older Corsair H50 type 120 rad and get the custom cover that allows you to attach it to the GPU but also keeps part of the stock cooler to cool VRMs etc...
 
What is the ASIC score on your card? Are you running the stock Vbios? If so that is likely a BIG part of your problem..I have a really good Bios that let me get over the 1.26Ghz hump on the core with LOWER voltage then the stock Sapphire Bios..Hell I can run my 2 cards faster in X-fire then your single card..Try this out and see if it helps..TechPowerUp

Also, what kind of rads (size, thickness etc) are you running? I am curious since I have a fairly robust loop (60mm thick 360 rad and 45mm thick 23mm rad) and your temperatures are fairly good..My cards top out @ 52C core and ~54C VRM1 (the main VRMs not the tiny single chip of VRM2) with both cards loaded 100% and the cpu loaded 100%..I have my AP-15s running @ 5.5V and the dual 200mm intake fans on my front rad @ 7V..If I crank them up to their full 12V I can shave quite a bit off of the temperatures but I love the silence..

Did you try to link to a BIOS file?

I have a DCUII runs 1050 out of the box and stays around or under 60 degrees. Doesn't seem to like clocking very much at all though, so a vbios flash would be great to try.

That said, I have not really bothered as on 1440p it handles everything I throw at it.

I guess witcher 3 or something probably wouldn't be so smooth. But after playing witcher3 on a 21:9 980ti sli rig, I found the graphics laughable for the amount of hype they get and performance required. Reminded me of Skyrim..
