Yeah that's pretty effin beefy in all respects there. Hopefully MSI does not drop the ball on VRM cooling.
 
I very much doubt they'll drop the ball on VRM cooling. It's a fully custom PCB, renowned for it's OCing capabilities in both the 780, the 7970, etc. Man, I'd love one of these bad boys in my case :p

My 7970 Lightning had very high VRM temps ( compared to other third party coolers ). My MSI 7950 had barely tolerable VRM temps ( compared to other third party coolers ). The MSI 780ti Gaming has excessive VRM temps compared to other manufacturers, ie Gigabyte and EVGA. MSI across the board has been dropping the ball on VRM cooling for whatever reason. I won't buy another MSI card, only one was terrible but the other should have been better for the segment it was in.

I heard the Twin Frozr 7950 had poor VRMs actually, but the Lightning? That's surprising and disappointing.

How do you know the 780ti has high VRM temps? I thought they didn't have VRM sensors on them? Or was was an temp gun used?

Guru3d does thermal imaging now. Also of concern is memory temps, though not really thought to be much of an issue the memory OC seems to be limited on the MSI unit as a result.

VRM temps are the bane of overclocks, generally speaking. Such is the case for my 7950. I can do super high clocks at ridiculously low volts, making cooling a piece of cake for my Accelero. My basic overclock would be 1100 core at 1037mv.

I can do 1215mhz at 1112mv pretty comfortably, but pushing any more voltage will put my VRMs above 85 degrees, which is really too much for my liking. Core temps are manhandled by the Accelero and really aren't an issue.. Try 44 degrees MAX after 30min of Valley at stock speeds 950 but undervolted (stable) to 931mv :p

Your 7950 sounds just like my old one. VRM's just held it back - but once I wanted 1440p @ 100+hz no amount of OC could help it get there. Great cards though. I can't tell you how disappointed I was in that 7970 Lightning, though. Was going to treat myself to a high end card, when I usually buy mid range and OC and the thing did like 100C on the VRM's at stock speeds.
