well now I have two choices for a new video card... Either a 8800gts 640mbor a ati 2900xt. But heres my question I mainly play FSX and bf2 will start playing 2142 though. Anyways saw the benchies and the 2900xt is dissapointing. Ive been hearing that the 8800series is not a true dx10 but the 2900xt is. Also when better drivers come out for it *2900xt* do you think the 2900xt will beat the 8800gts 640mb? im having a really really hard time choosing a card and I need it answered in a couple hours be4 I head off to frys to see if there are any good deal on gpus if not then... newegg!1 :D
 
i am in the same boat as you. There is a chance the 2900xt will get better drives so thats why i am going to wait a little more. If its still isnt any good with new drives i think a gts will be fine. then i have to think about nvida releaseing the 8900s... so i am just going to sit back and take it in.
 
I am stuck between them too, I have a few weeks to see how things play out though. :)

But I need a new vid card now! :Dfor my new c2d system. oh well I guess I will just have to wait and still use my amd 3200+athlon 64(939)(old skool :/) but the gpu is pretty good except its agp.
 
I have an Idea.... go to fry's and pick up a 8600gt then before the 30days return it then make my final decision on a 2900xt or a 8800gts 640. btw does fry's charge you for the inventory stock fee? *never returned anything at fry's before so I wouldn't know.

edit... I know what I can do I can just choose a number for each*between 1-10* and ask dad and mom to choose a number between 1-10 :p, dad is paying $200 for a gpu :D and I only have $225 :/

If you could return the card you buy anyway why wouldn't you get one of the cards you are contemplating? And of all things a 8600GT? :confused: If you were to do that you might as well get a last generation card because your aren't likely to be running anything DX10 on that 8600 card in the next month. Maybe not ever unless DX10 optimization picks up.

P.S. I'm not sure where you heard about the 8800s not being "true" DX10 cards? Yes the nVidia Vista drivers still have issues. But AFAIK hardware provides the required DX10 support.

i have been doing that at best buy first i had a 8600gts(sucks by the way) then got a 7900gs(comparable to the 7900gt that i RMAed a few weeks ago). I was planing on getting a 2900xt if it was any good, turn out they are still having driver issues. Now i am going to try an talk my rma into letting me get a gts 640mb and use that for a long as i can.

to the OP. for the love of god just wait a few weeks! I jumped on am2 right away and have been regretting it ever since. Don't do the samething with your video card.

No they don't charge a restocking fee.
 
I made my decision a ati HIS 2900xt. I need dx10 cause I have Flight Simulator X which is soon going to be dx10 :D. Will buy it on Wednesday.
 
GF 8 series are DX10, whoever told you they weren't is a lier.

In our gameplay testing we found FS X and BF 2142 to be faster with the 8800 GTS 640MB. We were able to use higher AA settings in both games.

I seem to remember the "not fully DX10" remarks from an INQ article around 4 months ago.

But seriously...nothing wrong with the 2900xt...after the price drops to 8800gts levels, it will be perfectly competitive

It still would have power and noise issues, though a different cooling solution could solve the noise problem.

I see this part being quickly replaced because of the power problems by a 65m revision.

I'm not saying that this is a bad card but here is the reality:

1: It's 6 months late
2: It's loud
3: It draws a lot of power
4: Immature Drivers
5: Not only nVidia next gen parts no more than 6 months away, but ATI's next gen might even be closer

Under these conditions, the 2900 should clearly be the best part in its price range, and its not. Not a bad piece of hardware, just too many mitigating circumstances to make it unattractive.
 
First you were going to buy a 2900xt to give ati "once last chance" in your previous thread...like 10min ago. Now you are going to buy either at frys? ..Don't buy an 8600 and then return it after 30days...its sh*t like that that makes prices for everyone else go up.
 
HD2900XT is loud is a new one to me. I actually read somewhere it is quieter. Care to elaborate?

Yup. I used to be so annoyed going to fry's and picking five of the same items with them return stickers on them before finding an unopened one. They need to change their return policy to restock fee.

How do you figure it will be competitive at 8800GTS prices its slower, draws more power than a GTX and is loud... Now if it where say $50 less than the GTS it could be called competitive.
