I picked up a 2900XT to replace my X1950Pro 256mb (Crysis and other upcoming games).
Right now I'm running a 420 watt Generic Power supply with 20amps on the 12+ V rail. I have installed the card and everything seems ok, except for 1 second of artifacts (very very few) that appeared the bottom right corner of my screen after initial boot with new drivers. My question though is if my psu is going to be ok to handle it?

My psu has the usual 24pin and 12v rails, it has a single sata rail for my dvd-rw, and then it has 2 other rails, each being fed into the card as well powering 2 120gb ide harddrives.
I've had the computer up with the card installed for over 3hrs now, no issues, but I have yet to try the card in any games. Will I be ok? or should I hold out and replace the power?

Your shittin' me right?

I wouldn't trust a 2900XT on a 600w psu, and even that is a stretch.

I mean quality > quanity, but come on, your sort of pushing the laws of physics.

One word, No. You need atleast a 500 watt with good 12v rails (30+ amps) otherwise it likely wont even start up or it will crash a bunch in windows.

What the fuck oh my god no. Get that video card out before you kill the system. The video card uses 275 watts at load alone. You need at LEAST a Corsair HX520W or above to run that card.

figured as much, card seems good in windows right now, no issues but I'll grab a new PSU tomorrow.

Good luck......got a fire extinguisher????

Go to ClubIT and buy the Corsair 620 for 109.

thats fine. i ran mine on a generic 350w psu for like 2 weeks without issues. granted you dont have a billion hard drives and such.

and what were the specs of your generic PSU?

you cant tell him he will be fine beause generic PSU's have so many factors and differences, and if he is fine, why is it your not running yours anymore?

do you really want to play russian roulette with that much equipment cause one is too cheap to spend $80 on a reliable PSU.....

is not worth the risk, some people are fine on generic PSU's, that i until they really start to use their computer hard, like gaming long sessions and crap and then POOFF good bye!

According to ATI, you want a minimum of 550w and for o/c'ing, you want in the 700-750 watt ballpark including both the 6-pin and 8-pin power cables.

Yeah... seriously.

It always amazes me how people are willing to spend the money on top of the line everything and then expect to run it all off of an "economy" PSU...

$110 for a solid (and relaible) PSU is more than reasonable.

good choice, now you can sleep at night and know you wont wake up to smoke and melted plastic.
