I was just wondering if any of you 2900xt owners could give me some insight as to how well your pc is running the game. I should be ordering mine within the next week or two and I want to make sure I'm making the right decision in getting the 1gb over a 8800GTX. If you start flaming about the 2900xt vs. 8800 debate I'll close the thread. Thanks much in advance let me know.

I wish I could tell you, but it just goes black for me after launching the game and stop responding

oh man. =/ That's not uplifting in any way shape or form. Hopefully ATi will have drivers out soon, I read they were coming out yesterday, along with nvidia's but I haven't seen them. GL getting that fixed, I can't wait to see the 2900 kick ass.

I like your optimism m8, it gives me a shine of hope it can catch up to competition :p

That's what I'm hoping. The 512mb card if I'm not mistaken is stacking up pretty well against the gts, so we'll see what happens with a nice dx10 game like bioshock.

still no AA on DX10......Id still rather force DX9 for 4xAA. Im sure a 2900XT will be more than up to the task regardless.

so has no one with a 2900 tried the game yet? I cant get it to work at all for some reason. I think its becuase I downloaded it off steam

Have you installed the newest Beta catalysts? Both Nvidia and ATI have released beta drivers for this game.

ATI has a hotfix for the game

I bought the game through steam, and just waiting for it to be released. Already pre-loaded and ready to go.
So I will not know the answers until they release on steam

I work @ gamestop, my copies sitting there waiting for me. I hope my big daddy isn't broken. The only issue is, my girflfriends birthday is in a week and I don't get paid again till after. So idk how I'm gonna get the $50. Oh and Gamestop doesn't open for another hour here. :D I can't wait.

played the demo on my 1900xtx, had it on max settings 1280x1024, it was too choppy @ 1600x1200

I can't wait to get this game, it honestly looks like a big hit, not only gfx wise, but gameplay wise, gfx are pretty hot game play though, is even better

Went through the demo with my 2900XT(512MB), AMD X2 5600+, 2G RAM, x64 Vista. Cat 7.5 drivers (haven't gotten around to updating yet). DX10 with all the eye-candy, 1680x1050. No shudders or any noticable slowdowns but I did get a couple texture drops in places. I didn't really pay that much direct attention to IQ details and I didn't enable the FPS display up (I assume there is one) because I was just playing it. Maybe next time I'll bring up the FPS and try it in DX9 too to see what differences I can see.

The texture drop happened on the floor in a couple of places and on some water that should have been translucent, actually a "waterfall" type thing where you walk through it, but the polygons were just a solid dull gray. Figured it was a driver issue so I came here to see if there were any known gotcha's for using Cat 7.8 on a 2900XT.

Thanks SHREK for that heads-up, sounds like the fix I'll need.

EDIT: Oh, and the Bioshock demo be some kind of pretty! :) In a dark and ghoulish way.

I have a 2900XT (512MB) and applied the hotfix from ATI before trying the demo. No issues at all. Game ran smooth as butter. Looks beautiful too.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit - don't know if that has any bearing.

Also I noticed that the card is running quieter than it was, although it is idling at 52 degrees C now and it was idling at 46 degrees with Catalyst 7.8 before installing the hotfix.

The 2900xt barely broke a sweat running Bioshock, although I was only running the game at 1280 * 1024 (using a 19" LCD).

Would be interested to see some benchmarks against the 8800s to see how this card compares in D10. I bought it over an 8800gts 640Mb because I had a hunch that in the long term it might prove to be more future proof. Also Nvidia's vista drivers weren't very good, so I was glad to get away from them.

2900xt guy here at stock speeds with q6600 at stock 2.4ghz n 2 gb ram in vista 32 bit

runs awsome man, test with fraps at max settings 1280x1024 is max 130 fps average 70ish low 45
at 1650x1050 res max settings max 110fps average 55-60, at start with water and fire was about 45-50 fps

everything was reported in fraps man the 2900XT KICKS with unreal 3 engine games lik vegas n bioshock i'm so glad i got this baby over 8800gts, at this point in time my scores match gtx scores from what i've read on the forums. Cept this nut that thinks his getting 250fps+ on 1900x1600 which i think is complete bullcrap LOL i mean if u gonna make somthin up at least make it reasonable lol. But yeh GTX users with same systems are getting around what i'm getting.

My 8800Gtx running 1680x1050 gives me 30 to 60 fps everything maxed out in game with Vista 64 bit and the latest beta drivers.

Not too shaby. :D Much better than all the other dx10 games/patches that have been released. I just can't get over how well the demo ran on my pc, r6:vegas slaughtered my card (7900gtx for now), bioshock loves it. =)

Do you install the Ati hot fix over the 7.8 cats or uninstall 7.8 and then install the hot fix?

The KellerEngine used by Ubisoft for the Unreal 3 engine isn't exactly optimized that well. It's a shame though ;)

I installed the hotfix over the cat 7.8 drivers. Hotfix seems to uninstall the 7.8s then install itself. I didn't check the driver number, but I don't think it's changed from 7.8

I was wondering if anyone else experiencing bioshock crash during the start of the game

2900 has always been friendly with UT3 engine let's hope it'll be the same for Crysis

i'm getting almost double what ur getting lol with 2900xt and q6600 stock speeds

HAIL THE MIGHTLY 2900XT wooooot i knew this card was way more future proof :p

LAWL TRY 2 RUN TEH GAME IN DX10 AND WATCH UR CARD FLOUNDER LOLOL. OH YA TRY TO RUN W/ AA 2 LOLOLOL U CANT ON ATI.

I am running in dx10 lol why da heck would i be running in dx9 lol are u new?

and lol 2 AA are u new?? People run 4aa not 2 lol

another arrogrant 8800 fanboy lol god u crack me up. Would u like me to post screens wif Fraps displayed? or even a video to rock u hard? lol.
It just makes me laugh to c that 8800gts users can't handle the fact that 2900xt kicks as in heavy shader use games lik unreal 3 ungine n crysis.

I am running 1024x768 with everything on high. Shame the AA options aren't there.
Runs very well. I can run at 1600x1200 but then there is noticeable slowdown in spots.

1800XT 512mb, core2 duo @ ~2.75ghz, 2gb ram

I would check my framerate but for some reason when I press ` it brings up the map/help/message window instead of the console. That seems to be mapped by default. So I removed it from the key mapping and still no joy. Tried TAB too. I've found the INI file for setting the Console escape key and it is set to 109. Not sure exactly how that value maps though.

After I saw how bad it runs on my Sapphire HD 2900 XT 1GB DDR4, not only did I swap out the card with my MSI 8800 GTX, but I've also returned it. Basically ATI is doing the same crap that Nvidia did the FX series, they are optimizing the driver so that it doesn't render everything. Frame rates with the 2900 XT are also chaotic because they fluctuate allot, I've measured it with FRAPS. Looks like the game is capped at 60 FPS do. I run it at 1680x1050 with everything maxed. Here is what happens with the 2900 XT: the game feels choppy and it almost frags, textures aren't rendered completely, basically for instance after you get your first "plasmide" with the thunderbolt, your hand is rendered almost black, no details, you can't see much detail on the mutants either, the "little sister girl" has no detail on her, for me the 2900 XT ruined the game, because there is a lack of rendering detail in it. I hope [H] decides to do an article on this, because I believe it's ridiculous that ATI is doing this. This way they also pull 3DMark scores, buy leaving things out during rendering. You guys should watch 3DMark 06 when benching a 2900 XT closely, and then swap it with a 8800 GTS/GTX or Ultra and see what I mean. The frames just don't flow. I know I've said a few good things about the 2900 XT before, but I'll eat my words and take those back because after I saw Bioshock yesterday on the 2900 XT I was convinced that it's a flop. I had my suspicions when while playing Day Of Defeat at 1680x1050 sometimes when I was like crawling on a rock and looking at it, it was like it was having a hard time to fill the screen with pixel and it was fragmenting (Vertical Sync didn't fix it).
Also tested to see how bad the AA hit is on the 2900 XT compared to the 8800 GTX:
3DMark 06 all default settings except for AA, I've set AA at 8X and run benchmark on both cards:
2900 XT: 7128 points
8800 GTX: 8501 points
Vista Home Premiun 64 was used, Q6600@3.0 Ghz, 4GB (2x2) G.Skill (5-5-5-15-T1).
The way I feel about that 2900XT, considering that I've overlooked the Jet Engine - Like cooler, is that I would take the freaking card and put a few engineers from ATI agains a wall and see which one of them can catch it with their head because the thing weights like a ton.
I hate the 2900 XT period, it's not worth crap. On the other hand my gaming experience with the 8800 GTX was awesome, crisp & detailed graphics (1680x1050, max. settings), everything flows:D.
Sorry for the long rant, but the 2900 XT sucks. And no, driver updates ain't gonna fix it. They didn't fix the FX series either back then...

Did you install the hotfix that had the fix for the missing textures? Because I havent noticed anything that you are saying about the missing textures with the hotfix (actually running the 4.10.1 drivers, which has the fix).

At 1920x1200 the game feels very smooth and never feels choppy to me atleast.

And everyone already knows that the GTX is faster then the XT, that isnt news. Would I like to have a Xfire profile and to be able to turn on the AA sure, but in no way is it ruining my gaming experince.

When i disabled shadow maps in game my fps went from 30-60 fps to 60-170. This is in Vista x64 with a Core2 3400Mhz 4 gig Ram and a Evga 8800Gtx in Dx10.

It actually doesn't kick ass in anything. AMD/ATI messed up because they've designed the card wrong. Who's fault it was, I don't know. All I know is this: I sell computers for a living so allot of hardware goes trough my hands. I've just build a new machine not to long ago and went with the 2900 XT 1GB, and did about 2 weeks of testing. The card has some major issues: First of all, it has to many dormant stream processors. Unlike the 8 series from nv, the 2900 XT has different kind of stream processors. It has 64 clusters, and each of them has 5 stream processors. The first 4 are identical, and do single precision Floating Point, and the 5th does more complex operations like sin/cos and so on. If you've ever payed attention in geometry and trigonometry class, you will know that sin/cos/tan/ctg are very often used to perform calculations and equations. This architecture is called VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) and it's very similar to what Intel used in their Itanium design about a decade ago. Yes, it can do math, but it sucks for graphics. AMD has every intention to use this design in their upcoming "Fusion" cpu, and they have to implement it in such a way that CPU&GPU are one, otherwise they run out of space on the silicone die. My conclusion is that they are using customers as "beta testers" for their design. What ever the reason, I've used to like ATI, but this card sucks. How ever, if you like it, use it, enjoy it. And no, it's not very good in shader intensive games either. You do have 4 out 5 stream processors on each cluster doing almost nothing but generating heat most of the time... Why people decide to take sides without having a clue beyond me...

Doesn't really matter anymore because I've got rid of the card. I've dropped $500 on the 2900 XT 1GB, and with the same money I can get a GTX which provides a smoother gaming experience... But what really bothered me is the damn fan when I start a game or switch Media Center to full screen to watch TV (yes, I use a ATI 650 PRO and I think it's the best TV Tuner $80 can get). No grudge with ATI, but they just put out a messed up product because AMD ordered them to. Why do you think that Orton quit his job? I also have a 1950 Pro in a machine and it's a damn good card for its age. So no, I am not a fanboy of nvidia, in fact, I think its about time we get some competition to drive this crazy prices down on gfx cards...

It my not matter to you, but it may matter to someone else reading the post. If you had all those issues and didnt install the hotfix then 2/3 of your post is basically pointless and was corrected by AMD a day before the game was released.
