2900XT 3DMark06 bench

No, most are perfectly willing to let others crack it then reap the benefits. How many people download illegal music or movies compared to those that actually rip them?

I don't understand why yourself and others refer to AMD being "late" with the R600. Every game out right now I have played on high settings with My X1900 XTX with no problems. C&C 3 throws me a stutter once in a while, but nothing that grinds. Any DX10 titles out?? Nope. Halo 2 is around the corner, and it happens that R600 is out at the same time. Just at the start of game launches for DX10 support. Thats called delivery when needed. 8800 was too early. Thats evident in the Vista Drivers. DAMMIT made the right choice in release time.

Plus, you basically get a built in Physics Processor with it to boot. Yeah, nVidia jumped the gun when ATI was developing deeper. This thing is gonna do some damage in Folding@home.

Folks refer to it as late because it IS late. Vista was late. Mac OS Leopard will be late. R600 is late. Why? Because the plan was to release it as a concurrent competitor to the 8800 series in the 2006 holiday season but AMD/ATI couldn't because of development problems with the chip. AMD only "chose" to release it next month because it was forced to. That makes the chip late, just like a flight that is rescheduled by an airline from 9 to 11 because of bad weather is still late - even if it leaves promptly at 11 - by any regular meaning of the word "late." Now maybe AMD will make lemonade out of lemons but disputing the reality of this delay is pointless. You seem to confuse the fact that it is late with the question whether its late arrival makes any difference. On that count, I largely agree with you, although one difference the delay does make is that it has most likely given Nvidia the time to develop an Ultra version of the 8800, allowing it to keep the performance crown.

Late, is a good thing though, if you're going to get working drivers from the start, and more features.
Unless you have a 30" monitor....

Just imagine the state of Nvidia drivers if the release occurred a couple months earlier. They very well could have pushed back the Vista release because the driver situation was so bad.

Sometimes delays aren't the result of problems with the company delaying the product.

you forget, the people who know how to crack this stuff, arent the %90 of joe blows who buy computers from dell and HP and gateway / apple, so this copy protection i STILL effective for the larger part of the market.

yeah , u got a point, i forgot dell and hp still exist

Some things we can all agree on. NV dropped the ball wrt drivers, but at least there is hardware available. ATI dropped the ball wrt release schedule, but there drivers are good, as long as you don't require the fastest cards right now.

TBH I'm far more pissed with ATI's inability to schedule though. I want competing products, so I can make an informed choice wrt upgrading. As it is right now I think my decision will be based on Crysis/Bioshock performance. I've waited this long, what's a bit longer......:(

How are you guys all so sure that the ATI drivers will be great when they aren't out yet?

As someone who has owned 3 ATI cards and 4 Nvidia cards over the past 6+ years, I can tell you that ATI's drivers have been consistently better in all ways.

The constant battle I have been fighting with my 7900 GT and Vista has almost insured that I will never buy an Nvidia product again. Their driver support is UNACCEPTABLE.

The problem Nvidia has been having with drivers isn't about making drivers for the card. It's about making drivers that work properly with Vista, on top of working for the cards I suppose. ATI/AMD on the other hand already have drivers that work well with Vista. So if they aren't stumbling all over Vista it's fairly safe to assume they could make a decent set of drivers for what should be a second generation product.

No guarantees but there isn't anything I'm aware of pointing towards ATI having problems with drivers.

No kidding,LOL.They talk like they all have R600's and the latest driver builds from AMDati and have been playing games with both for weeks... :D Dont count your
chickens before they hatch.

Still,I hope that those that buy into red,are rewarded with a solid Vixta DX10 driver that plays well with the new hardware.I see a one two punch coming soon, from Nvidia,a new performance driver, and a faster card.

I hope you're not talking about the 8800 Ultra. Because only a handful or so will be released, and it will cost far more than it's worth.

If the new ATI stuff can run Crysis maxed at 1680x1050 without paying $400+ I'll switch over.

Hell if anyone has a card in the $200 range that'll do that I'll get it.

Try running Supreme Commander on high settings on the XTX1900XT

I do with my X1950Pro with no problems.........

How are you guys all so sure that the ATI drivers will be great when they aren't out yet?

Not sure they will be great but confident they will smoke anything NV has at the time (or next few quarters)

Word! I actually sold my 680i motherboard and 8800GTX due to the constant crashing and graphical issues running Vista. Best move ever made.

Well we are used to that game from nV. AMD/aTI know that to.
That could be the reason they hold back on HD2900XT 1GB.
Because kloks aren't set in stone yet. Plus it will cost around $500.

Very currious what 8800U and HD2900XTX bring to the table.

I can't say I'm blown away, but it's still interesting that it nudges out an 8800 GTX. If NVIDIA's main counter is the rumoured $999 8800 Ultra, I don't think it bodes terribly well for NVIDIA for the next three to six months.

I expect a bit more from the hardware backing this card. Do we have preliminary power consumption figures for this particular card yet? I'd like to figure 3DMarks/watt. And how much memory are we talking about with the XT? I assume 512, but will it be enough for true next-gen titles?

Let me preface this by saying I am an Nvidia guy (nvidiot?) and have been for years.

I HATE the ATI packaged drivers for all the bloatware and "features" that work like crap, BUT

This new card, if delivered with the features that this says, is either going to revolutionize gaming cards as we know them, or it will be an utter failure.
Onboard physics, Onboard HDMI, Onboard 5.1 surround (not 7.1, but at least its a start)...
That is something that if it works well, I think could well become the "standard" for high end gaming cards, especially in todays world of mobos that have 1 or no available PCI slots once you have 2 vid cards installed.
In a smaller form factor, and for WAY less money, Nvidia is clearly going to HAVE to step up their game and step down their prices. It seems like Nvidia is counting on their hardcore fanbase being willing to pony up the $$$ to stick with what they feel is a superior product (and right now, sorry to say, Nvidia DOES have the superior product) But that isnt going to last long if ATI releases a card this loaded with features (actual features not the crap they have included in CCC in the past), this much power, and this low of a price.

I cant wait to see this card, and I cant wait to see Nvidias answer (and the pricepoint of that answer)

Performance = good

Pricepoint is really whats going to win it though, thats a real nice price.

However, ill stick with my 8800GTX for now, I remember ATIs x1800 paper launch all to well, cards announced available in March, couldnt buy one anywhere until late august.

Once I see them on shelves at 399$, ill believe it. And i hope i do see them on shelves soon, thatll drive down the price of nvidia stuff.

Competition is good for everyone.

How are you guys all so sure that the ATI drivers will be great when they aren't out yet?

I think the question is, how could they be any worse than nvidia's? :p

Nah, j/k... but from interviews that I've read about ATI, they constantly say that they're very confident in their Vista drivers, while I really haven't seen Nvidia say that.

I dont think I can agree that 2900xt will be much faster or faster at all. If you look at the futuremark online results browser, there are people with stock Core 2 Quad 6700's that are getting over 12K in 3dmark06 with the 8800gtx. I already get over 12K in 3dmark06 with my system and I dont even have quad core. Id like to see some benchmarks with the core 2 duo's. I dont think its good to even compare the benchmarks using 3dmark06 because it definitely takes advantage of the quad core for increase scores in the cpu test which really dont matter in games as much. I could pretty much say that there would be minimal to no difference at all compared to my current setup. Now the XTX version will be a different story.

The only empircal way to use 3dMark is to run it with each card on the same rig. That way, the only things that change are the cards and drivers. You can't compare that score between two rigs which is what some people think they can do.

even if the xt is on the par with 8800gtx, thats still a big deal, because it will push the prices of the gtx way down and put the 8800gts in a bargain bin, the xt will be a primary choice for many due to amd having much better vista drivers

thaz only the xt not XTX, nVidias money mooching days are finally over in the highest end market for almost a year

Yeah I hear you there. Hopefully this will drive the prices back down to where the high end cards use to be a few years ago. Maybe Nvidia will drop the prices below ATI's which means cheaper SLI 8800gtx for me if I decide to go that route.

nice,
.........and i was just thinking about getting a 8800gts, (wtf was i thinking?),

ati let me down, but ati no longer exists, its amd now,

i'll buy a video card from amd, hope they don't suck as much as ati did

ati still exsists, amd bought ati an now they are one so if ati product gets sold it has to carry the amd logo on it.

can't you realize that if it were not for them the green team would have 2K $ cards.... and they would preform like crap!!!

Why hasnt anyone mentioned the 89xx series GeForce cards? Or NVidia's upcoming die shrink? The 89xx should be just in time to completely spoil ATIs launch.

Like the man said, you only have to gaze into the crystal ball and it will tell you "how can ATI drivers be any worse than Nvidias?" No facts to back it up, but checking the current situation its logical to assume ATI having more quality drivers on Vista than Nvidia. Atleast everything points into that direction, so no rocket science here just alot of rumours :)

And you know AMD will have better Vista drivers because....?

Because they already have released better Vista drivers than Nvidia? Everyone knew something was up with Nvidia's drivers months before Vista actually released. So when they released what they did it wasn't a huge surprise.

ATI on the other hand has Vista drivers that work rather well currently while Nvidia has been struggling with the Vista driver model. ATI has also commented that they are confident in their Vista drivers for R600. There is simply no reason to believe they will have any problems.

A lot of people have 659.00 cards that run like crap. AMD/ATI need to be around it obvious just by the non driver support Nvidia has given to Vista and XP since the launch of the card drivers have been lukewarm at best. Why? Because there is no competition and hasn't been for the last year. I hope AMD/ATI come back to give Nvidia some good competition so we get better prices and better drivers.

A good article to read (even considering the source) on where some of the blame really falls for the R600 and even Nvidia's driver problems:

ROFL:confused:

You do realize you're posting that FUD, in a thread, about Dx10 cards. And that Vista will be the only Dx10 gaming environment available for a good long while (until the WINE boi's get to it)?

Hate to tell ya 'tin-hat-man', but if you wanna view any HD-DVD or Blu-RAY or hell, any newer media, you will have DRM in the device/system, too.

Better go make sure you got your camping supplies, in a year or so, you'll be avoiding every consumer electronic device on the mainstream market. They'll all be riddled with DRM of some variant.

Edit: I sense the excuse will be that you're not interested in the newest video cards because of Dx10, but that excuse will only work this time around.

$400? Whats that saying...if it sounds too good to be true....

It's possible - the equivalent 8800GTX has been camped out at $550 range for months, so I think $499 would not steal many 8800GTX sales.

NVidia can also collect a premium being that they are/were the only ones producing DX10. Last i read, the 89xx series is due on mid-May, which is going to drive the price of the 8800 GTX to about 450, with a dual gpu 8950 GX2 retailing for 600.

NVidia is the only one producing DX10 GPUs at this time...therefore they can charge a premium.

Better? I think most of us are aware Microsoft produces the software...thanks though...

since i have no plans to get vista, should I get the x1950 XT 512mb? it beats the 8800 GTS 320mb at high res almost completely.
